Note: Yes I redesigned him to look less naked and more... jumpsuit-y. Look, I know it's kinda a metal skin suit but I'd rather add on some cool dark colors on there for less looking like he's naked...

Born Nathaniel Adams, he was an effective soldier and explorer for the USA, a true patriot who went above and beyond. This made him perfect to be a test subject for empowering soldiers in case they needed to fight super humans like Superman, Saiyans, The Hulk, and other forces. Adams was specifically assigned to energy based options. However the experiment striped him of his humanity and reformed him into a pure energy being of immense power. Given a metallic suit that contained his energies and radiation, he became Captain Atom, a new American super hero.

Though still loyal to the USA, he's become more pragmatic, particularly due to befriending the heroes the military and government were trying to prepare for, specifically becoming a member of the Justice League. Nowadays he contemplates his place among men given his power and new state of being...
