I made this over the weekend in a panic because AN is fast approaching and it was my last weekend at my dad's where all my painting and woodworking tools are. And with no reference - hahaha - that really sucked.
The cut-outs are so that the straps that hold it on my back have more grip.

craft foam (guard - no time for wood)
bias tape for handle wrapping
wire insulation paper for sheath
