Description One of the two remaining Red Army Air Forces heavy bomber dirigibles. Shown here on what would be it's last flight, the DB-03 was photographed over Leningrad along with a flight of Tupolev TB-3 bombers joining her on a run at German positions. While encountering fierce anti-aircraft fire and strafing from Luftwaffe air cover, the massive ship wasn't actually brought down until a one-in-a-million shot from the distant Schwerer Gustav tore her from bow to stern, immediately destroying most of the gas cells and damaging integral parts of the air frame. Perhaps mercifully, the shell failed to detonate inside the airship, instead plunging through the hull and detonating in the city beyond.

(For the record, The-Necromancer is indeed aware of the utterly ridiculous odds of Gustav incidentally blasting a moving target out of the sky. Key word being incidentally, as the giant rail gun likely wasn't intentionally aiming at the airship. The scenario does amuse The-Necromancer to some degree due to it's improbability...)

One hell of a rail gun, though, wasn't it? Completely useless as an effective weapon, but damn.

The pure dumb coincidence of such a scenario is a bit mind-boggling, I'll admit.

The-Necromancer can just about imagine the Gustav's artillery spotters saying something to the effect of "...did we just down a Zeppelin? I mean, WE JUST DOWNED THAT ZEPPELIN!" Having heard this, the gun crew and commander decide to call it a day, knowing that there is no possible way they can top that...

Well, that and the Gustav had ungodly slow reloading time. Hopelessly impractical weapon, really. A rigid airship as a bomber is more practical a weapon, and even those aren't so practical at all back in the days of hydrogen lifting gas...
