Lore

In the lead up to the Amaris Civil War, the SLDF began looking into new designs for their CAAN regiments, hoping to provide a cheaper alternative for scout duties to the often-underfunded department. Freeport Armour Works met the challenge set by the SLDF quartermaster, and managed to turn out a product well ahead of their competitors, securing them the contract.

Utilising converted Ferro-Fibrous Armour the Skipper was a quick, fast-moving submarine, which could be crewed by a single operator in mid to shallow waters: massively cutting down on training and supply. Utilising fairly basic technologies, it could last longer under water with its Fuel Cell engine, and had plentiful ammo capacity for over four minutes of sustained combat. Still due to the fallout of the Amaris Civil War, Freeport Armour Works never delivered a single Skipper to CAAN and took instead to proliferating the Skipper design to all Member States, and the periphery instead. Over the next thirteen years Freeport sold over ten-thousand annually to many parties, taking advantage of the arms proliferation during and after the Civil War to secure clients. This saw the Skipper produced  in record numbers to many waters dominate worlds who had long been looking for a cheap, small light patrol craft for their PDFs.

Now known across the Inner Sphere by its tagline “Every man a Skipper,” Freeport spent the next one hundred years producing spare parts for the Skipper until technical shortcomings forced the engineers to redesign the advanced Fuel Cell engine to that of a hybrid fuel injected electric engine; the like of which were used by many of their rivals: generating the 9Dg-SKP. Still the choice netted the company lucrative refit contracts in the hundreds of thousands, thanks to the unit’s low combat losses due to disinterest in maritime operations during the first through third succession wars. This proved fortuitous choice as the company by the 3030s had managed to reinvent their well-made Fuel Cell engine… interestingly independently of the recovery of the Helm Memory Core: which allowed them to resecure refit contracts to replace the engines they had just replaced. Still the return of Ferro-Fibrous technology saw the company resume production of the classic 8-SKP model by 3044.

Still despite these multiple refits, the design never once saw a overhaul to its forward mounted Short Range Torpedo battery, which due to the position of the powerplant had led to the four tubes being spread quite far apart, creating a difficulty with clustering the shots. Still by this point many pilots had simply become accustomed to the awkward placement.

Overview

A very uninteresting design, but one that is necessary. The Skipper is in short, a basic simple trooper sub, meant to go fast fire a decent amount and carry just enough armour to allow incoming attacks to be deflective. The idea for the unit largely came from an early idea I had for a sub which had an oddly ‘boxy’ shape as opposed to a more conical one.

The choice in quirks is mostly to get the very light design Low Profile reasonably, and also allows me to put Inaccurate weapon something, as I feel it’s often an underutilised quirk. Still the upside to the units insanely low BV cost is you can easily put a better gunner in the Skipper to offset this issue. This is not a economical choice and is more thematic.

A good use of the Skipper in underwater combat is to ferry Aquatic BA with Magnetic clamps or magnetic claws around.

A Succession War era downgrade, while Fuel Cell Engines did not fully fade out during the succession wars, the technical shortcomings of small company like Freeport Armour Works led to them having to swap the Fuel Cell Engine for a traditional fuel electric model (ICE), used in many Submarines across the Inner Sphere. This had a knock-on effect of reducing the depth and the time the Skipper could remain submerged, as well the loss of the Ferro-Fibrous Armour led to only marginal loss in protection, but it was protection which meant the design could more easily flood if targeted by direct fire energy weapons like a PPC.
