Anakin Skywalker is the main character of the whole Star Wars franchise. He was born on the desert planet of Tatooine. He lives the first nine years of his life as a slave on Tatooine with her mother. The Toydarian Watto was his master. He bought him from the Hutt. He was later discovered as a Force-sensitive being by the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. His potential was so big that the Jedi Master made everything to free him and brought him to the Jedi Council.
Unfortunately, the Jedi Council rejected the young boy due to be too old to be trained. It was only after Jinn's death that Anakin became the padawan of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the former apprentice of Jinn.

Before the Clone Wars, Anakin was tasked to protect Senator Padme Amidala (who he met years prior on Tatooine before he became a Jedi). Anakin had feelings for the senator and the two fell in love during the mission. It is during this time Anakin got his right hand severed by the fallen jedi and Sith Lord Count Dooku (aka Darth Tyrannus). Then, Anakin and Padme becomes married.

During the Clone Wars, Anakin became the master of the Togrutha Ahsoka Tano. Anakin led the 501st during the war alongside Captain Rex. With his padawan and legion, Anakin fought many battles. But then, an attack on the Temple eroded the trust the Jedi had for the Order. Ahsoka was blamed for crimes she didn't committed. Thanks to Anakin, Ahsoka's name was cleared and the real culprit was arrested and jailed.

Anakin became more and more distrustful of the Jedi Order over the course of the war. This played right into the plans of Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, the man who ruled the Galatic Republic Anakin serves. Palpatine was also the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious, the true leader of the Separatists who declared war against the Republic.
Sidious tempted Anakin to join the Dark Side by promising him the power to save Padme, who Anakin saw dying in his dream. He already failed to save his mother and, in retaliation, killed the Tsuken Riders who kidnapped and murdered his mother. Anakin hesitated, torn between his loyalty to the Jedi and the Repbulic. But soon, after revealing that Palpatine was Sidious, he was confronted to a choice. Either letting Master Windu kill Palpatine and potentially giving up his chance to save Padme, or save Palpatine and potentially save Padme. Anakin made his choice.
Now called Darth Vader, he marched to the Jedi Temple with his trusty 501st, he killed all the Jedi still in the Temple. Then, he headed up to Mustafar and killed all the Separatist leaders.
After a dramatic duel with his former master Obi-Wan, Anakin got severely injured, forced to wear the sinister dark armor that will become his tomb.

For almost 30 years, Anakin served the newly formed Empire as Darth Vader. He led the Inquisitorius, a group of Dark Side enforcers tasked to hunt down all remaining Jedi that survived Order 66.
Vader was brutal and merciless. His iconic breathing and cold demeanor instilled feat into the minds of everyone the Sith Lord met. For the years to come, Vader executed all the orders of his Master, without questioning.
All changed when he met his son, Luke Skywalker. He got obsessed with him. At first, he wanted his son to become a Sith like him and overthrow the Emperor. But then, at a critical moment during a confrontation on board of the Second Death Star, Vader was put once again before a choice: let the Emperor kill Luke and giving up on the legacy of Padme, or saving Luke and doing the right thing for once in his life. Vader made his choice.

Vader died in the arms of his son after throwing Palpatine down a reactor shaft. Now one with the Force, Anakin became a Force Ghost, watching over his son.

As Anakin Skywalker, he was loyal and protective to his friends, willing to go in extra length to make sure they are all safe, even disobeying direct orders. This brought him a lot of problems over the years. But his unwavering loyalty and high competence on the battlefield was enough to excuse this tendency of disobedience in the eye of mostly everyone.
Anakin also thought outside the box, always having creative ideas to solve most problems. But he also shown glimpse of the brutality and mercilessness he will show as Darth Vader.

As Darth Vader, he was cold, ruthless, cruel and even sadistic. He was an unstoppable force that nothing will shake. At first, he was solely focused on having revenge on Obi-Wan who mutilated and left him as dead on Mustafar. Then, his obsession shifted to his own son, Luke Skywalker. And his obsession soon turned to genuine love. Which proved to be the redemption of Darth Vader.

Anakin do not have any role in the Sanctuary. In fact, he's not even part of it. He sometimes appears to Storm and Lucy as a Force Ghost and give them warnings and guidance.
In fact, the Jedi lives in the Worlds Between Worlds, a place located in between the dimensions where one can see all the possible timelines and even intervene to change events. Of course, nobody did that and not even Anakin is tempted to change his own history. In fact, Anakin acts like a guardian of this place. Technically, he is one with it and can "ride" it to go anywhere he pleases in an instant. This is how Force Ghosts can appears and talks with the livings.

It also seems that Storm saw Anakin as a master and friend. We can sometimes watch Storm parrying against some unseen forces and talk to said force. It was revealed it was Anakin fighting and training her in swordfighting. Especially against Force wielders.

Why ? Well, Anakin hinted several times that his Sith Master, Darth Sidious, will come back one way or another so he decided to help the Sanctuary be ready to face the most powerful Sith Lord of the History of the Galaxy.
