The main issue for me when I view this image is that the tail is such a large part of the photograph but its very unfocused and so the majority of the image's blurred. That bothers me, though I see how a tighter crop wouldn't work - that was my first instinct (to cut the tail off) but it unbalances the composition. I'd try to retake the shot through a non-fingerprinted glass bowl and see if I could get a better focus. Barring that option, I'd take a sharpen brush and go over the tail and front pebbles, then add a thick white border to the image. =]

thanks for the ideas. I'd used unsharp mask but not thought of using a sharpen brush. or a white border.
This is the best focus I've been able to get of him so far because of the DOF is so shallow and I wanted his eyes in focus.
