I sadly did not have the opertunity to watch the orignal series. So I have always wondered. If Grimlock is this big powerful "brute", why has he not joined the decipicons? I mean wouldn't he get more fighting that way? Or is he loyal to Optimus only as part of his programing?

He did join the Decepticons for an episode, until Prime saved Grimlock's life, and earned Grimlock's respect. Why does Grimmy remain an Autobot? That probably hasn't been very deeply explored in any series yet.

I know why Grimlock joined the Autobots. While he despises Optimus' leadership, he HATES how the Decepticons abuse their strength on those weaker than them. Regardless of his thoughts on Prime being Autobot commander, Grimlock does have a degree of respect for him, and at one point considered Prime his friend.
