Description The first in a series of railfanning shots I'll be posting. I found a nice new spot in the Cajon Pass that is situated within view of all three mains a couple miles off State Route 138, it is known by the railroads as Hill 582. It involves me driving unpaved roads in my 1985 Buick, but it is a rather nice place to watch from, so it is worth the off-roading.

Nice. Have the looney bins been run outta there? I heard somebody was scaring people off with a rifle.

Oh really? I shot this back in 2005, and there weren't any rifles then as far as I could see. I also went on a couple trips there a few months back and no rifles then either. I'll have to look in to this matter further I think.

Yea, I heard some people were trashing the market at hill 582 on another forum, with all sorts of weird stuff going on. The SA's are now patrolling that stretch of track more often.

Thank you, it's a hobby I take rather seriously. I't nice to see that people recognize that.

Well, that may play a part in it, but it only provides for the background. The subject stays the same no matter what the background is.

Better a nice, sweeping desert visa than a a McDonald's or Wal*Mart. :/

Like we discussed earlier, I guess you don't realize what beautiful country you live in when you're from there.

That is true. McDonalds and Wal-Mart aren't very pretty.

Yeah, being above them like that makes them look like toys in all the photos, its kind of a neat effect.

Do you guys have electric-powered trains there?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Stealth-Ninja In reply to Plornt [2005-12-17 10:05:16 +0000 UTC]

What exactly do you mean by "electric-powered trains?" If by that you mean trolleys, then yes. There is a rail museum some 20 miles from my house that operates a nice collection of vintage trolleys, electric locomotives, and various pieces of steam and diesel equipment as well. Also within a couple hours drive, there are two major cities with moderate sized light-rail systems, nowhere near as extensive as their rail transit systems were 50 years ago, but its a step farther than they were 10 years ago.

I meant trains powered by electric motors that draw current from overhead wires via pantographs...etc,.

The-Stealth-Ninja In reply to Plornt [2005-12-17 19:21:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there havn't been any trains like that around here in about 50 years, way before I was born. The east coast of the US has some though, however I believe they only carry passengers.
