I've probably found more Silver Spirits and Silver Spurs in this city than any other car type, but I wanted to upload these pictures to show the Spirit mechanism in action.

When the new Silver Spirit was being developed in 1980, Rolls Royce wanted to find a way of making sure that if the Spirit of Ecstasy that adorned the nose was knocked, it wouldn't be buckled, dented or broken off completely, resulting in a costly repair. So instead they made a really rather clever system where the Spirit was spring loaded, so if it was knocked it would fall down into a small compartment below the nose and be hidden there until the owner put it back in place. It was also a handy feature during the day when the car was parked so that owners could go to work safe in the knowledge that no vindictive passers by would harm their little spirit.

Sadly this Silver Spur was rather beaten up, aside from the dislodged Spirit the paintwork had been scratched and the rear passenger window on the right hand side had been smashed.

Clearly this Spirit is in need of a good home...
