Description One of the oldest surviving locomotives in the world, and a member of the National Collection, this is Midland Railway 156 Class 2-4-0, 158A, built 151 years ago in 1866.

The locomotive worked for 81 years from when it began work on express passenger trains out of London Kings Cross during the heart of the Victorian era, to when it eventually found itself serving as station pilot at Nottingham in 1947. The locomotive was withdrawn in July of that year but was restored to its original condition and put on display in Birmingham in 1954 for celebrate 100 years of New Street station. It then became part of the National Railway Museum's collection and is currently on loan to the Midland Railway Centre in Butterley.
