So many times, I've heard fans compare Deadpool of Marvel Comics with the amazing mercenary I've grown to love over the almost 11 years since I first saw him on the Teen Titans cartoon: Deathstroke aka Slade Wilson. Most people are able to get the names of each right, in that Deadpool's alternate name is Wade Wilson, and Deathstroke is Slade Wilson. Most people also know which comic book franchise (DC or Marvel) which each are a part of. But what so many people have made the mistake of assuming and speaking as if it were truth is this: who came first. I've heard so many people say that Deathstroke is the Deadpool of the DC Universe, only more serious. And my inner passion for Deathstroke the Terminator always makes me rather politely say that that's incorrect. Since Deadpool was based off of Deathstroke (and therefore Slade existed before Wade), Deathstroke isn't the Deadpool of DC. Rather, Deadpool is the "Deathstroke of Marvel" (with a sick sense of humor of course).
Now, that didn't bring on this picture.
What brought on this picture was my need to draw the man and character I love from DC comics after such a long while. So, in between resting from my early morning shift, today I got the idea for, sketched, designed, and drew this picture (that's less than 24 hours) of Deathstroke the Terminator. I put a lot into this picture, which is based off of my mental recollection (no reference pictures for his pose or his attire were used. It was all done purely by my memory of this magnificent man) of Slade. Originally the name for the drawing was going to be something along the lines of "Now Do You Really Want To Mess With This?" (due to the way he tilts his staff and cocks his legs). As time went on I decided to add in the D and S, to make it have more of a playing card feel. After all, he is the "Slayer of Hearts" and the "King of my Heart". Those were other ideas for a title. But the more I looked at this picture and reflected on all the work put into it, I just had to put it as "The Original Merc'. His pose, his weapons, his uniform, to me, it says it all. Now I'm not denying that Deadpool's not an entertaining and at times awesome character. He's always good for a laugh. But There's never going to be anyone quite like the Original Mercenary. The one, the only, Deathstroke The Terminator.
Although I absolutely adore him, I do not claim to own Slade. For magnificence like him could never truly be owned or tamed. Only scribed and drawn. We're just lucky enough to be along for the ride.
The entire drawing was done in graphite, classic #2 pencil.
