Artist Comments: After that initial sketch, a few people asked me for more info on my 9 character 21, so I've been picking at this over the past few days while I'm on vacation. Funny, despite the fact that 21 wasn't made by the Scientist, I couldn't help but do this in the style of the Scientist's notes and sketches

WARNING: if you haven't seen the movie, there may be spoilers

Number/Name: 21

Number Placement: Lower back

Poster Tagline: To advise us.

Age (years since creation): 2 ½ years

Gender: Male

Features: Made from green tweed and sewed together with black string; a brown leather patch extends from one side to the other around his back; the remnants of a navy and yellow tie cover his joints with a little stuffed into the V-neck of his chest; his hands and feet are made of ebony wood and copper; two long, thick stitches form his eyebrows; right eye is copper lined with silver; left eye is copper lined with black; he has translucent silver eyelids meant to be used to focus his eyes, though he keeps them half closed in an unimpressed expression.

Abilities: Extremely knowledgeable, keen eyesight, not a good fighter but can hold his own.

Weapon(s): Old and worn tie (used as a tool more than a weapon).

Likes: Peace and quiet, logical conversations, putting 19 in his place, 3 & 4 (occasionally).

Dislikes: Disturbance of the peace, his personal space being violated, 3 & 4 (occasionally).

About:

IN SHORT: 21 (and his brethren 19, 20, 22 and 23) were not created by the Scientist. They were brought to life six months after the events of ‘9’ by the two rebel leaders and three of their companions, members of a group of humans who survived the gas attacks in an underground colony. They managed to recreate the Scientist’s machine using blueprints given to them by 3 (long story, good one) and brought the five stitchpunks to life following nine failed attempts, hence their numbers. 19 and 20 were the only ones planned, but the rebel leaders decided to create 21, 22 and 23 as thanks to the physicist, mechanic and seamstress that aided them.

21 was made from the remains of the psychics professor’s old college blazer and tie, for sentimental reasons, meaning he is made of green tweed with a brown leather patch that reaches from one side to the other and around his back. He uses the remainder of the tie as a tool to get around, sometimes as a lasso or rope, and occasionally uses opticians’ trial glasses to magnify his vision from his perch on a bookcase. Physically, he is built a little taller and leaner than most of the other stitchpunks, and the ebony soles of his ebony and copper feet are weighted slightly to keep him weighed down, lest he fall over. His eyebrows are stitched thicker than the others’: a prank from the seamstress who stitched him up, since the professor who gave him life had quite distinct features. His left optic case is black instead of silver, giving him the appearance of a monocle.

He is wiser than his years, which is reflected in his knowledgeable though fairly young voice. Intellectual and with a minor superiority complex, he has a logical way of thinking and acts as a mediator, grounding 19 and 20 when their ambitions become too wild. He is a reluctant third-in-command: although he gets along well with and respects 20, he has the occasional run-in with 19 who doesn’t like to be proven wrong.

21 obsesses over books and is a brilliant storyteller, able to recite every word from thousands of novels. It’s just a shame there aren’t many stitchpunks that want to hear them. He has the utmost respect for the original nine and the story that 3 relayed to him about their creation is his favourite. 3 developed an immediate attachment to him from the moment he was created. He seems easily annoyed by 3 (and later by 4) but still tolerates his presence. He recognizes 9 as a true leader immediately, even bowing to him on occasion. Undoubtedly, he finds the most conflict with 7, whom he considers rash and impulsive. To the contrary, 7 considers him a dawdling idiot, too wrapped up in his books to care about what might be going on outside the human’s compound and his safety zone.

Though he considers himself the most logical of the underground stitchpunks, 21, like all the others, blindly follows the humans for giving them life. However with 9’s encouragement, he is the first to start questioning their motives ...

Voice Actor: Hugh Laurie

And that's that. Now I'm tired ...
