Description
In this map, Hulagu of the Il-Khanate is killed in battle before the capture of Baghdad, averting the complete destruction of the house of wisdom and the large scale damage to Baghdad. Hulagu's son Aqaba, a Nestorian Christian convert married to a Byzantine princess (as in OTL), is able to prevail against the Golden horde in the eventual succession war after Mongke Khan's death and become the hegemon of the western mongol empire. Aqaba goes on to use this newfound power and influence to deal with the Mamelukes in Egypt, annexing the levant and propping up the deposed Ayyubid dynasty as tributaries.
