With a sigh, Jade closed her lunchtop, Rose’s answer filling her with disappointment and an added twinge of determination. “Potty Training for Dummies” and other similarly titled books lay scattered over the floor, an unopened package of panties clutched in Jade’s fist as she stared daggers at it. She would make it to the potty; she was quite a few years late already, regardless of what Grandpa or Bec may have thought. With unrivaled focus, Jade tore open the plastic wrapping, her mind firmly set on remedying this mistake.
A thin cotton garment patterned with flowers in her hand, Jade let the heavy, sodden diaper that currently sat around her waist fall to the ground, defiantly yanking the panties into its place. Her determined expression remained on her face despite the lack of other people around to observe it, the girl doing her best to convince herself that she was ready. Confidently, she marched towards the door at the end of the hallway, beyond which lay the one thing in the house she was not permitted to touch.
Long dormant memories began to flood her mind at this step of disobedience, Jade remembering past sights and sounds with each additional step. Grandpa had taught Bec to change her at a young age; she could still see him standing over her at the changing table, demonstrating the process for her dog. It didn’t take long for Bec to pick up on it, being incredibly intelligent and nigh omnipotent, and old dogs don’t forego their tricks for new ones easily. Whatever Grandpa’s plans were for her, they disappeared the day he died, leaving Bec to continue his tried and true caretaking methods.
As she grew, Jade quickly discovered that the bathroom as a whole was off limits when unaccompanied. Every time she entered, she’d find herself in another location, Bec’s physics-defying abilities teleporting her away. Experimentation revealed the strange porcelain object in the corner as the source of Bec’s concern, it even remaining off limits while Bec was in the bathroom with her. A bit of research and logic was all it took for Jade to figure out what was wrong; the conversation with Rose was the last step in determining Bec’s error. Now, however, Bec was asleep, allowing Jade to finally have a chance to use the potty, regardless of her Grandpa’s or her dog’s wishes.
The girl crept closer and closer to the door, her fear growing with every step. What if there was a good reason Bec kept her out of here? What if the toilet actually was dangerous? Her grandpa was devious; what if it had powers just like Bec but was actually malicious the whole time. Jade’s certainty wavered before the closed door, her worry clouding her thoughts.
Jade quickly dismissed the thoughts as far too silly to possibly be true. With a decisive motion, Jade reached for the doorknob, twisting it and pushing it open to reveal the contents of the room beyond.

Rose slammed her laptop shut in mild frustration. Somehow Jade always knew everything that was happening even though she was nowhere near. She had to wonder at this point whether or not Jade had put up cameras in her apartment.
A cursory sweep of her room revealed nothing of the sort. Still, Rose couldn’t deny that she was in a rather strange situation. Her mom’s obsession with those wizards was bad enough, but her reaction to that single accident was even worse. Whatever Rose’s secret thoughts may have been, her mother coming home with a pack of colorfully printed diapers for her to wear to bed embarrassed her to no end. Of course, there was no way her mother was going to win that battle; Rose wasn’t going to give in that easily.
The next few days passed quickly, escalating rapidly towards her current situation. Given that Rose’s mother was implying her childishness, Rose had no choice but to up the ante. That day, one of her plush Squiddles became her constant companion around the house. In addition, Rose made sure she was visibly sucking on her thumb whenever her mother was around, hoping to make her uncomfortable enough to stop the ridiculousness.
As expected of her mother, this only increased Rose’s humiliation, the girl one day walking back into her room to discover a bright purple pacifier laying on her now Squiddle sheet-covered bed. Rose took this in stride, making plentiful use of the pacifier as well as making sure to wear her nighttime diapers constantly, even during the day. It didn’t take long for the room to end up completely redecorated, her bed replaced with a crib for “safety” and a fully stocked changing table sitting against one wall.
There was only one way left for Rose to push this further, and as Rose’s pride had never been as important as beating her mom, she had no hesitation moving forward. Squatting down right in front of her mother, Rose filled the seat of her diaper, asking for a change as cutely as she could as soon as she was finished. Rose’s mom unflinchingly took her up on this offer.
For several days after, Rose was certain that she had finally beaten her mother. Today, however, Rose’s mom had gone out suddenly, mentioning that she had to pick up “a package for her baby.” Though she couldn’t imagine, how, her mother had somehow found another way to push this farther. Rose’s fear was tainted with an unexpected bit of excitement, her thoughts moving back to her friend, wondering if the earlier question implied that she was in a similar situation.

With a gulp, she lifted herself up, sitting down on the seat just in time to start to fall backwards into the bowl.
In a panic, Jade shouted her dog’s name only to find her surroundings replaced with her bedroom and herself in a fresh diaper, sitting safely in a bouncer. Jade’s momentary fright expelled itself into the rear of her pants, filling them with a foul-smelling mush.
