...Aposematism is to warn off predators in the animal kingdom, not humans. It's a style choice? But if you're repulsed by unnatural hair colors, that might say something.

Otherwise the 'I'm not like other girls' way of thinking is pretty gross.

As things go, I imagine all true preppers must be hovering between cackling at the world and beign terrified of the world.

BTW:
Could we say that there's a sense of community among the prepper community, or would that be contradictory to being a prepper during a crisis?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to NachoTheTrekkie [2020-03-23 12:27:55 +0000 UTC]

Being a prepper just means that you' prepare for things. So we come from all kinds of background and have all kinds of core beliefs. We're more likely to be rural conservatives than urban liberals, but that's often a chicken\egg situation. A lot of urban liberals become rural conservatives when they join the community as there is a large overlap in our ethos. Things like being self sufficient tend to make you conservative even if you don't intend it.

Some preppers are taking all of this in stride. There's a certain amount of "I told you so", but in general they are more worried about other people fraking out than they are by the virus. There is a fair amount of community with this type of prepper.

Other preppers are paranoid loons and are locking themselves away and sleeping with a gun under their pillow because they think that this is just the prelude to the Walking Dead coming true. This type of prepper is just as likely to see other preppers as a threat as not.

And there is aΒ  whole load in between.

Well, I'm currently sitting on enough rice, beans and flour for my Mum and I to last a couple months, plus my regular larder. The meat will only last a month and I'm out of eggs, but things haven't collapsed yet.Β Β

And I am also fairly certain that my society will crumble.
Know anything about the current situation in Mexico? Well, we have a head-over-heals populist in the big chain, meaning that (like Trump) doesn't have any real ideology beyond "I tell the sheep whatever they wanna hear, then sit with my bankrollers to have sheep for dinner". And, like Trump, he's a science-illiterate, near- elderly manchild who has tantrums on the podium on a regular basis and thinks that anything that contradicts his rhetoric is a personal attack.Β
And, unfortunately, he thinks that COVID-19 is "some made up crap meant to question my regime" and that, rather than having to take any "weird and unusual" measures, he should focus on important stuff, like travelling around the country, kissing babies, hugging grannies and having townhalls everywhere. And he says he's immune because he has "moral superiority" and "a shield of honesty".
You may or may not know that, but his words and attitudes are pretty much copied from Hugo Chavez, from Venezuela.Β
The only good thing is that he's quite old, like the vast majority of his Cabinet, so by this time next month Mexico will no longer have an Executive Branch. Too bad that he'll be taking tens of thousands to the grave with him.Β

Don't believe what I'm saying? Search either "AMLO" or "Mexico news". My country will soon be the worst hit by the pandemic, and all I can do is prepare to weather the storm.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NachoTheTrekkie In reply to TheBadFaerie [2020-03-24 16:28:52 +0000 UTC]

Gun ownership in Mexico is microscopic. There's literally only one gun shop in Mexico, and it sells around 5000 guns each year, mixed between single-shot rifles and small handguns.Β
But I do have bamboo and corded kevlar (harvested from optic fibre cables). And woodworking tools. I'm making a bow.Β

Here's my imbecile in chief this weekend, enjoying a cuppa while touring the nation:
www.youtube.com/watch?…

"There is no need to panic, or to see bad augurs. We Mexicans, because our cultures, we are very resilient to all maladies, and we will get through. This time [too] we will make it through."

"Do not stop going out. We are still in Phase 1. I will tell you when not to go out. But, if you can, and have the economic means, take your families out to restaurants, to dinners, because that strengthens our economy."

"Do not panic: keep your distances and we can keep having interactions. Here in Oaxaca there are only two cases."

"It may escalate, but we're prepared and we'll do fine."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

NachoTheTrekkie In reply to TheBadFaerie [2020-03-24 21:52:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is not a wrong impression: our black market imports more than 30,000 weapons each year, mostly Yank "grandfathered" machine guns and heavy handguns, which end in hands of the cartels. Mexican law penalizes illegal gun ownership most severely: while a strong-arm robbery basically gets a slap in the wrist, if you did the same with a gun, you first get illegal ownership of the gun (or "gun misuse" if you actually own it legally), then aggravation if its loaded, then much greater aggravation if it is listed as "not legal for civilian ownership", then organized crime (if you weren't alone), then armed robbery.

Know something funny? If a real politician, like Obama, had asked for the Wall, we Mexicans would have been glad to chip in to stop the 28 billion dollars (between drug dollars and grandfather guns) that flow southbound into the cartels each year. But no, Trump had to make us the bad guys, and demand that we fix your addictions.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to NachoTheTrekkie [2020-03-26 11:32:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I find it kinda dumb that Trump make such a big thing about the border wall being an America First thing. He did it because a lot of his base are opposed to their tax dollars paying for things like that, so he wanted to make it look like somebody else would be paying for it.

The idea of actually cooperating with each other for our mutual benefit never crossed his mind.

Then again, the liberals aren't any better. If they had their way, your entire country would become one huge mass transit system to funnel people from south of your borders through your country and into ours.

It's also kinda ironic, in a twisted sense of the word, that most of your social problems are being fueled by guns and money from our side of the border creating a black market on your side of the border.

There's liberal, and there's liberal.

The problem that our society is having these days is that the most extremely varieties of liberal are pushing themselves to the forefront, and their brand of liberalism is openly totalitarian. Far more so that it ever used to be

They support book burning, censorship and historical revisionism, and they demand purity and virtue signaling at very turn.

Oh yeah, I'm against those assholes. I actually think that Disney's "Song of the South" should be re-released, with a disclaimer saying that it was made when views were much different. (I remember a series of cartoons that was released with an intro by Leonard Maltin, basically saying that if we deny it happened, we risk it happening again.)

There is no truth so scary that it should never be told, as far as I'm concerned. (To which people will come up with concepts in response, I guess...*laugh*)

Right now there's a big problem with Anime distributors, particularly companies like Funimation, who are deliberately changing the dialog in order to insert modern western views and political commentary that simply doesn't exist in the original.

Sometimes they change the entire meaning of scenes to make them political.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

3D-Ladysmith In reply to TheBadFaerie [2020-03-23 20:02:50 +0000 UTC]

One of my friends has been in the anime scene for a long time (Rob Fenelon, if you're into the history of anime), and he's complained about the changing of scenes for what seems forever. (I've known him since the mid-80s.) American distributors have changed stories so that the protagonist is the 'right' color (IOW - changing the protagonist where possible), and a ton of other things. Subtitles are a big place to do that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to 3D-Ladysmith [2020-03-23 20:24:06 +0000 UTC]

There have been problems with "localization" for a while, such as when they re-made Tokoyo Mew Mew into Mew Mew Power, or Cardcaptor Sakura into Card Captors, but most of these things were done because they were targeting a different audience from the one that was originally intended (Such as taking the romance out, and emphasizing the action, so that it will attract more boys).

What we're having now is social engineering. Changing the show to influence the audience, rather than changing the show to suit a particular audience.

3D-Ladysmith In reply to TheBadFaerie [2020-03-23 20:58:12 +0000 UTC]

Especially when you realize that the original makers are doing a bit of that themselves, such as writing properly strong female protagonists, often in the roles that used to be taken by men. (Suspicion is that it's due to the high likelihood of a female ruler of Japan in the future.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheBadFaerie In reply to 3D-Ladysmith [2020-03-23 21:15:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm not so sure.

Anime has always had strong female protagonists, but they've always been balanced and non-political. It's a trope in of itself.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

3D-Ladysmith In reply to TheBadFaerie [2020-03-24 20:58:17 +0000 UTC]

Just talked with Rob about it - he was referring to manga, and the sudden tendency (for a while) to put women in extremely high office. (Back when it was thought that Akihito and his wife were only going to have daughters.) But I agree with you - anime was MUCH more likely to do strong women - enough so that some of them weren't really released here because they couldn't change the story to make a man the lead. Sexist idiots.

Sorry for taking up so much space on this in your thread.

In Japan there's actually a whole genre of fiction about underachieving male protagonists surrounded by domineering capable women. It's mostly aimed at male audiences. There is also a long and well established history of things like female pilots. Particularly giant robot pilots.

The irony about this whole situation is that in modern day American , we're more likely to see women and minorities in positions of power\influence on TV than in real life. Just look at how many movies and tv shows there are that have female presidents.

It's a specific type of character. The aforementioned Rob commented on it, as have some of his other anime involved friends. If he was available right now, I'd ask him. I will ask later and probably jump back in to let you know. He expounded on that for a while (more than once ).
