Now, for lore:
Once chained up, Hate about to leave the ruined au he created via Sans’s hatred for the Human and their actions, Papyrus knew he had to take action.

Papyrus Attacked Hatred, knowing it was the only way to stop something. He wasn’t exactly aiming, he was just hoping to stop whatever he was doing. Hate, being newly physically formed in this case and not expecting an attack due to the warped view he had on Papyrus.

Hate dissipated, his “essence” beginning to form around Papyrus. Take part on him, much to Sans’s dismay. But it didn’t corrupt him like it did Sans, but it changed him.

Though, because hate was holding the beaker with the human’s soul in it. It shattered, causing them to be able to escape. They fled, as the underground began to have its own civil war with everyone against everyone, the only ones cleared of this effect being the skeletons.

At the end after Frisk picks off some monsters and eventually reaches Sans, who’s in waterfall unlike the judgement Hall. He then suffers his usual fate of death.

Frisk would then meet Papyrus in the judgment hall. Him hoping the human wasn’t the reason behind “that thing that looked like Sans” causing all of these issues. Eventually, this starts a fight, with Papyrus’s false beliefs that the human wouldn’t let the underground suffer like this as he fights them, slowly having those beliefs shattered.
