Actually no, the explosion is in the background (see the ninjas being blasted away).
The crew are pretty well equipped, due to Noah's (sabre-toothed cat) knack with weapon-making. The only member that does wield a sword, however, is the captain. And since she doesn't trust Renier (the boy) with a weapon, he had to compensate with his broom... not that he really cares.
