Description

Who doesn’t love a racing game with awesome power-ups to give you that healthy advantage of speed, protection, and explosive ammunition? When I first watched Wreck-It Ralph, I instantly fell in love with Sugar Rush and its characters. The whole candy-theme is just so much fun to embrace, and the ways Disney got creative with this concept were downright brilliant and clever. Lately, my attention has been on the power-ups used in the races. Many fans have come up with their own ideas of candy-styled gadgets and weapons over the years and I decided to sketch some ideas of ones I’ve had for a long time.

Some people tend to keep things like the Ice Cream Cannons reserved for Adorabeezle, Sprinkle Spikes for Taffyta, etc, while others like the Sweet Seekers can be used by any racer. However, I find this to be too constricting, so I make every power-up free for all. You can use whatever you pick up.

I’ve got 2 headcanons regarding Sugar Rush’s races to share with you today: the first is that all racers have a preprogrammed core ability that gives them a unique advantage in every race. A few examples I’ve come up with are Adorabeezle is aerodynamic with the jumps and ramps, Gloyd increases the player’s protection against attack power-ups, and Candlehead gives the fastest acceleration boots. I gave Crumbelina a really special one: a 100% higher attack strength with any power-up she uses. This whole idea grew from the sequel when the 2 girls at the beginning of the film choose Vanellope because her glitching is the ‘best super power’. That’s what made me I think, “Do ALL the racers have their own special power???” Someday, I may share my complete list of each racer’s unique ability.

My second headcanon ties in with the universe that all my Fanfiction stories are set in. After returning to power following Turbo’s defeat, Vanellope passed a new rule that allowed her new fellow-racers to create their own power-ups using any candy materials available to increase the fun in the races and add more surprises for the players given that Sugar Rush had never seen any changes or updates in 15 years (ironically, they receive one after she leaves for Slaughter Race). As revealed in some of my stories, some of these custom gadgets come in very handy…but others spell disaster with a capital D.

    (A)   Bad Apple Blast. A custom power-up that Swizzle and Minty crafted together. This candy-striped slingshot fires a smoldering green apple grenade with enough punch to knock racers off the track.

    (B)    Lolli-Poppers. A kid-friendly machine gun-style attack weapon that rapidly fires a 12-lollipop ammunition belt while spitting out the wrappers in the process. The marshmallow mechanics are always kept busy sweeping the litter left over from this power-up. Look closely and you’ll see that even the gun’s targeting scope piece is a lollipop.

    (C)    Sour Surge. One of the newer power-ups added in by Sugar Rush’s recent update. It’s a highly volatile sour ball that sends a blast of voltage to electrocute racers and their karts to a standstill. Takes a few seconds to charge, but when ready to zap (and combined with Crumbelina’s special core ability), this short-range attack item packs a shocking wallop! One that Adorabeezle strongly believes she can live without.

    (D)   Cookie Mine. A power-up that looks like a delicious cookie, but explodes on touch, delaying any kart that runs over it. The sneaky trick to be aware of is that it can blend easily with the track as common candy terrain, so beware of the cookies with the blinking chocolate chips.

    (E)    Energy Soda. A carbonated fizzy drink in a giant bottle that is both refreshing and powerful enough to propel you ahead with a quick speed boost! It can also rocket you out of an attacker’s shooting range. Candlehead is very fond of this simple, yet effective defensive item. Racing can be thirsty work!

    (F)    Freezing Icing. Another new power-up from the update. A gigantic icing tube filled with sticky buttercream that can either slow a kart down to a gummi worm’s pace or temporarily blind the driver’s vision. Mounted on a 360-degree rotational turntable, this power-up has the nifty option of firing either forwards or backwards to slow down your opponent.

    (G)   Kernal Krackers. The newest addition to Sugar Rush. It’s a custom power-up that Gloyd created, taking inspiration from his Halloween candy theme and the firecrackers seen at Fix-It Felix Jr. This huge blaster shoots flaming candy corn projectiles that emit whistling screams and fiery explosions akin to a firecracker. Destructive to match his coded reckless nature, it’s too bad that Gloyd didn’t check the exact charge on it first. To see this power-up in action, check it out here: www.deviantart.com/minionstuar…

    (H)   Taffy Tape. Taffyta’s custom power-up, taking on the form of giant strips of double-sided tape made of taffy that sticks to the track and clings instantly to the tires of any kart coming from behind, ideal for racers who want to maintain their first-place position.
