Species Name: Helmeted Honeyeater
Latin Name: Lichenostomus melanops cassidix
Native To: The Australian State of Victoria
Conservation Status: Critically Endangered

Despite being named a honeyeater these birds are known to eat invertebrates from behind the bark of trees. They will mostly feed on nectar, honeydew, lerp (crystallized honeydew created by lerp insects), eucalypt or other plant sap (otherwise known as manna). This is Victoria's only endemic bird which means this bird is unique to and can only be found in the wild in Victoria, Australia. More specifically it appears that the bird can be found in the wild at the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve. Zoo's Victoria have been involved with the recovery of the species since 1989, they successfully released 36 of the birds into the wild in 2019 to help fight extinction.
