Description The conversation this still is from is certainly one of the most important scenes from season 4, at least for me.
Sherlock seems quite insecure and maybe even shy during that conversation. He doesn't look at John most of the time.
This shows one of the few moments he acutally does.

My third try at watercolours and my first try to do a face and hair.
I have to admit I left out the stubble because the hair already made me want to give up on this repeatedly. And I have to admit I did something my arts teacher and professors always frowned upon: in the end I used an ivory colour pencil to draw the hightlights in the hair, I am a bit ashamed of not managing it otherwise.

I am still very new to this watercolour thing and only after I finished this I learned what masking fluid is what it is for. Maybe I should get some.

Also I worked on different paper this time (got a new pad) and I must say the difference is amazing! It's so much easier because the paper won't start pilling after a few strokes with the brush. It was a completely different experience to use this paper.

You've done such an amazing job with this, i think the bit i find the best is that you've managed to keep the paper wet enough to bend the colours on his face really well. At first look of this picture i wouldn't have said it was in watercolour because its been so well blended. Thank you so much for the gift work over on Ao3. As you've probably read i really needed something like this to cheer me up. Thank you dear friend.

Well, yes, the thing with the water. I must say I am not totall convinced of this paper by HahnemΓΌhle. It was certainly the more expensive variety, but it soaks up the water quite fast and then you think it must be still wet because you just wetted the entire sheet and you start to paint but the colour doesnt flow because the surface is dry already.
The force to reform the paper the water has makes it loosen from the sheet from the pad sometimes, which is making things a bit difficult.
Very happy you liked it and it came at the right time for you
Thank you

His face looks so perfectly drawn, the realism is great and I don't mind the ivory in his hair. If anything I like it. Of course I'm no art teacher, but I adore mixing mediums and I mix them rather insanely - I use markers and watercolours and pencils, often all in the same piece. Sometimes I use even weirder things like candlewax to draw. But for me art is all about experimentation and fun.Β

If anything I'd say that the shading on his face looks a little too dark, in contrast with how light the right ride of the room is and how dark his skin looks as if the room was darker - I don't know, looks slightly off to me, but I'm no expert so - yeah. Great piece. Β

You are right. Actually the right side of his face is way darker in the original, but I kind of left out the completely dark background and reduced it to a few pale forms because I wanted his face to stand out. Thank you for telling me. Maybe I'll darken the background, but to be honest right now I am just happy it is finished.
