A curveTo() line (actually two, one for the color, one for the outline) I asume ? heeeeh?
And recursion for the roses? Or just a loop? The leaves are pretty sweet (and simple, which makes them even more sweet), too.
I'm a little unsure about the fade effect; I guess you jsut darken it (over and over again, jsut like the classical "blur fade") and as all colors used while drawing are sort of red, all become more red and then darken to the void.

try zoom in and out in your browser. it re-sizes the bitmap and clears it so you can see what its doing.

Haha nah way more complex than one line... its only actually drawing the ends of each line each frame, it then draw()'s them onto a background bitmap and clear()s the original movieclip.
To make the outline, it draws a thick black line first, then it draws the purple line over it again. The fade is just a repeated colorTransform().
The leaves and roses are done the same way... but i don't really remember how they work now.

I'm not a 100% sure i can really help. I don't do a lot of learning from tutorials so I wouldn't know where to start looking for them for you. I got to a point where i can learn most things from flash's built in help documentation.
I can however give you some basic advice. I'm not sure how well you know action script (or if you use AS2 or AS3. I use AS3) so i will start simple; you need to first know how to use the MovieClip.graphics methods. You will also need to know a bit about how to use the flash.display.BitmapData class and how to draw() a movie clip onto it. Also, this applies a colorTransform() to the BitmapData object so you will need to know a bit about that too. oh and about classes and particle systems. each pretty simple, but tricky to stitch together.
The basic structure of the program goes as follows;
there is a particle system;
/* particles = Array containing a class i wrote called 'branch' */
addEventListener("enterFrame",EnterFrame);
function EnterFrame(e){
for(var i:uint = 0; i < particles.length;i++){
particles[i].run();
}
}
in the 'branch' class there are methods to handle
creating more branches and leaves ect.
the branches all draw a line from their old position to their new position on the timeline movie clip, the timeline movie clip is then draw()"en onto a BitmapData instance, then the clear() method is called on the main timeline to get rid of the vectors. the rest is all fine detail that would take forever to explain here.
