The Little Matchstick Girl! I read that story when I was like, four and it really moved me. And it's been one of my favourite fairy tales since then. But really nice comic idea, though!

Yeah I agree that it moved me as well, just not in happy ways but I still love it. And thank you!

I remember watching this at school when I was in 3rd grade. It was sad then, and it's still sad now--even though I don't cry.

I actually had to "read it in tandem" as a theater assignment with a classmate.

It wasn't boring, if that's what you're wondering.

So you read one sentence, then the other person reads the next or so?

Oh...wow...I'm getting this weird feeling that I just KNOW that story, like it was told to me a long time ago, but I can't remember...

...Ah, that's right. I did; now I remember. I have this huge book of old stories I was given as a kid, that's one of them(all the stories in it are uncensored, so small wonder this one would be included. I like it a lot, though...very few of the tales in that book brought me to tears, and this was one of them...heck, it still gets me emotional now).

It'd be hard to censor this story without rewriting the entire thing...
It still brings me to tears... I was at an amusement park (with the theme of fairytales, called the Efteling in the Netherlands) and one part tells stories with little statues and scenes that move or whatever. And one of them was the Little Matchstick Girl. I just caught a glimpse of it, realized what it was, and started tearing up before I saw it play playing out the scene...

Oh you're welcome. I wanted to do this for a while actually... like Dane and HC Andersen's stories (because it's a running... well not joke... in my family about how all of HC Andersen's original tales have the saddest stories). At first I was going to make a little picture with 2p!Nyo!Denmark as the little matchstick girl... but didn't end up finishing that... I just didn't know how I was going to go about telling it and then I came up with this comic...
But it is a really good tale. And even though it has to be one of the saddest tales out there, it has a lot of meaning to it. Like the fact that she is suffering, with her abusive alcoholic father and being poor (why she has to sell the matchsticks), and she's put out of her misery in a peaceful way, seeing all these things that were a source of happiness to her in her life before her grandmother, the one who loved her before she passed away and left the girl, takes her away. It's not just about a prince taking away princess from an evil witch before marrying each other and living happily ever after.

Exactly. It's beautiful, and not only that, it's also painfully truthful.

Yeah..it's quite sad that everyone ignores the poor girl with the match sticks. All she is trying to do is sell them but she somehow manages to use one before she dies. It's pretty sad. :/

Yeah... here we just get a Disney version of it with a light ending and stuff... Grimm and HC Andersen (originals) are hard to find...
