Description This is "Jareth," the plush barn owl I've been working on for over a year and a half (most of that was researching and creating the pattern for him). He is perhaps actually a little larger than a lifesize American barn owl. He is inspired by the Jim Henson movie "Labyrinth," of course, and a Laby fanfic online that I loved called "Bound," by Xeli. He is how I imagine Jareth looks for my own fic, "Three Sides."

He is sewn using white cotton flannel, a light tawny colored quilting fabric, a medium brown/gray mottled quilting fabric, and a grey cotton batik fabric. His feet are made of a tan and white pebble-patterned cotton fabric.

I used iron-on interfacing to layer 3 fabrics for his wings, and apply the gray spots to his back and head. The wings and tail are top-stitched to show individual and groups of feathers. His face is hand needle-sculpted. For his beak, I hand-dyed leather in a realistic peachy tan color, and he has enameled black glass eyes. His toes and lower legs are wired and are positionable.

I hand-drew the barred patterns on his wings and tail, the black speckles on both sides of his wings, back, and head with 3 different colors of fabric dye marker. The white speckles were hand-applied using fabric paint. The brown ring around his face was hand-painted with fabric paint. The tiny white "feathers" on his face are made of fabric paint, hand-applied using a needle-tip on the bottle. He may end up getting more light barring on the undersides of his wings, I haven't decided yet.

Born in the early hours of 1/21/2011, I lost track of hours spent making him, but I would guess that the sewing/stuffing/finishing alone took me over 40+hours. I'm very happy with how he turned out (his face isn't as heart-shaped as I drew the pattern but I believe that is because the flannel fabric stretched out), and another owl, Olwyn, will be in the works soon.

I will be selling finished owls on my website, thecopperdragon.com (click on "The Owlery" once you're there, then scroll down to nearly the bottom of that page), and part of the proceeds from each will be donated to the Raptor Education Group, a non-profit organization who rehabilitates and releases injured and orphaned birds of prey and other wildlife, here in the US. it is my favorite movie of all time, hands down (though HP series is close second as a group!). i have one of the original theatre posters framed up, waiting to be hung in my office.

thanks! i actually looked into doing that- bought the eyes and everything- but they really didn't look right on the poor little guy. i figured i'd keep that as an option for anyone who wanted to purchase one that way though!

I know you might not want to share because you are selling the item, but do you happen to have a basic pattern for the owl that others can use? So far, finding patterns for stuffed owls has been exceedingly difficult. I would really appreciate it. You did such a lovely job on this one, you must at least have pointers

TheCopperDragon2004 In reply to Owl-Boy [2011-12-11 06:03:37 +0000 UTC]

I'm working on making the pattern to my owl available to sell (it's not quite ready yet- still tinkering to get the face right). If you bookmark my website (or this post), I'll post once it's ready. I actually made this owl/pattern because of the appalling lack of decent plush owls out there on the market.
My only real pointers are to have lots of patience. And buy more fabric than you think you'll ever need because if you mess up and need to redo an entire piece of something, it's impossible to find the exact fabric again!

Lol, I know exactly what you mean with the fabric. I've learned my lesson about that with a little yellow dress. xD And I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one disappointed with the lack of care put into plush

absinthiac [2011-11-26 13:16:18 +0000 UTC]

the ONLY thing that i can nit-pick on is the fact that there is a missing 'toe'

This is just so amazingly well done.

TheCopperDragon2004 In reply to absinthiac [2011-11-27 02:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I actually do know he should have an extra toe- I'd had problems turning that tiny piece of material and got frustrated and posted the picture here before he was technically finished.

I gotta get off my butt and post some updated (toed) pictures.

i completely understand. I make some seriously misshaped [on purpose] plushies, and some of the details are a PAIN. Fist to come to mind is pencil thin arms that i have to flip inside out >.< anything with a body bigger than my hand and i go nuts with the arms.

lol, exactly! the hands/feet on the teeny dragons that I make are the same way. finished, the hind feet are as big as a dime. drives me crazy doing them!

lol, i bet. probably the same width most of the way down, which makes it even harder to turn rightside out. i feel for you!
