I start out with a simple messy sketch. I lay down the pose and the proportions, then I go to linework and then coloring. I am basing the entire thing on my imagination. If there are certain parts that I simply can't draw correctly, like a specific hand pose, or getting the anatomy of a body part right I look up a reference.
