Ketsu Mataki is the main protagonist of Kihasusei. She is a wandering ronin samurai that appears very intimidating and violent, while being kind, caring, out-going, and fun. However in battle, she is very rude, violent, and takes pure joy in battle.

Being part of the Mataki clan, a clan filled with murders, soldiers, war strategists, assassins, and traitors who were banished from their clans, Ketsu never understood the workings of the clan since she was at a very young age. She was always quiet and shy. Kids would try to avoid her to her being the daughter of Isamu Watanabe, a infamous war general who went against his soldiers for a woman he feel in love with. Manami Kyogoku, a woman who was also an enemy soldier. Both of them betrayed their armies and ran away in order to hide. Eventually, they both were married and joined the Mataki clan, since returning home was impossible. They changed their last names to Mataki after joining the Mataki clan. But has no idea of the clan's true workings.

Manami and Isamu realized the truth about the clan, and their murderous ways. And the worst part is...
Ketsu was inline to be the next heir of the Mataki clan. And once she is heir, she will the leader of murderers and traitors. She, herself, will be a killer with or without reason.

Manami and Isamu agreed to leave the clan and take their daughter somewhere else, away from the horrid clan
However, leaving the clan is complete heresy.

Assassins and warriors were in pursuit of the couple, to either bring them alive or dead. Isamu told Manami to run while he can hold them off. Manami was about to refuse...until looking down at her child, realized she and the child would not be safe. So she nodded and ran away, only taking one more glance at her husband, knowing the outcome. After reaching a far away village, Manami tried to find somewhere to hide, knowing more Mataki clan members are in pursuit of her. However knowing that hiding will prove useless for her, she need to hide her daughter instead. She came across a dojo with the master taking a night stroll around his dojo.

The master spotted Manami and asked if anything was wrong. She handed Ketsu to him and begged him to watch over her, and shelter her. She than ran off before the master could stop her. Ketsu didn't understand what was going on and she proceed to run after her mother.

After 10 minutes of searching, she then witnessed the killing of both mother and father, both fallen to the ground with a loud thud. This was the day that traumatized Ketsu for a long time. The clan members than left the scene and the master from the dojo arrived and found Ketsu, who was looking at her deceased parents. She wanted to scream, cry, and beg that this wasn't real. She badly wanted this to be just a nightmare instead of reality. The master felt pity for the child, and couldn't stand Ketsu witnessing this. He than decided to take her in erased her memories of the clan...and her parents, with a special sword he used. He then took care of Ketsu since that day.

Ketsu was then enrolled in the master's dojo, where she then met Kimiko, Ketsu's first friend. The two of them became best friends months later (please refer to Kimko's background story).

Years went by, and Ketsu is still on her journey to know who she is. She knew that she promised to write to Kimiko daily, but then Ketsu didn't want to worry her, so she halted her letters to her. Since then, she wandered around the land, searching answers to her forgotten past. Then maybe, just maybe...

The eternal promise she made with Kimiko might come true. Who knows, the Earth hold many adventures and exploration. Something that both Ketsu and Kimiko would want to share. Together.
