Megan's tone carried the conviction that her words needed no further explanation. The captain of the guard's pained expression said otherwise. "His mercenary company has a contract in town! There will be repercussions--!"

"We won't be here for them. He challenged; she won. He lived; only his pride was hurt. Maybe some bones," Megan added, sweeping past the guards with one hand still on Vikson's shoulder. A Ranger's authority did not automatically extend to their companions, and she wanted them both gone while the guards were still off balance.

"But why didn't you stop her?"

Megan turned, pinning the aggrieved captain with her glare. "She is Vikson, and if some drunk fool wants to challenge her drunk ass then I know what's about to happen. You can try to stop the tides from coming in, or an avalanche from coming down. Or you can get out.

"The way."

There was a moment where she feared they would call her bluff, but the line of guards melted in the face of her quiet bravado and the captain's uncertainty, and she hustled Vikson away from the scene of the crime and more importantly, out of the guards' sight. Vikson would pay for her little fun by foregoing a night in a bed and sleeping on the road.
