Description
Sanjana was born in a small rural Indian village. She always dreamt of getting away somewhere else. Most of the other villagers were very religious and worshipped an ancient elephant god. The god was so ancient that no one could remember its name. It supposedly lived in the village in the form of an actual living elephant that the village took care of. When the old elephant avatar died a new one would appear, seemingly out of nowhere. Sanjana was fairly certain that the elephant was just an ordinary elephant that the elders replaced. The neighbouring village have a similar avatar, a cattle god. Sanjana's village and the neighbouring village had been feuding for as long as anyone could remember. The gods didn't like each other, so therefore the villages didn't like each other. Or at least that's the explaination she had been given.

Sanjana studied hard and went away to the university as soon as she could. Before she had only met people from her village. But at the university she met people from all over India. She loved it. 6 month later she met her boyfriend Raj and started dating. Sanjana quickly found out that Raj was from the village that neighboured her own. At first they were unsure what to do since their villages hated each other. But then they decided it didn't matter. When their parents found out they were furious and Raj felt he needed to go back home to calm his parents down. They tried to keep in touch with each other but after a couple of days Raj stopped answering her texts and calls.

One morning she was woken by the buzzing sound of a text message. For a moment she felt joy, thinking it was Raj. But it was from an unknown number.

"Hello, this is Raj's sister Anjali. I'm not supposed to write to you, but Raj wanted you to know that he has been chosen as a vessel for our village god. You won't be seing each other again."

There was a picture of a large bull attached to the text message. It was standing in a field and was adorned with flowers and decorated with complex painted patterns. Confused and shocked she walked into the bathroom. The reflection in the mirror made her dropped her cellphone. Her nose looked longer then before and strangely shaped. Sanjana's ears looked strangely large. She stood for several minutes and touched her nose and ears in disbelief. They were real. She jumped when her cellphone started ringing. Sanjana could see that it was her mother calling. She decided not to answer. Instead she decided to call in sick and stay at her apartment.

As the days progressed so did her changes and she took on a more elephantine appearance. Her mother continued to call her with regular intervals. But she was was afraid to answer. When her skin had turned mostly grey, tusks poked out of her mouth, her ears had become small elephant ears and she had grown a long trunk, with white paint dots which had appeared seemingly out of nowhere, she finally decided to answer.

"Hello mother" Sanjana was surprised that she could speak so well with her new tusks.
"Finally she answers! I was worried that something might have happened"
"Well... you could say something has happened"
"Oh? Tell me all about it. Do you want me to send Sanjay to come get you?"
"Err... no, don't send anyone. Something strange is happening. I'm... changing"
"Sanjana, I want you to be honest with me. Are you starting to look a bit like... an elephant?"
"... You could say that"
"GOD BE PRAISED!" Sanjana ear hurts and she is forced to turn her head away from the phone.
"I was worried about you when I heard that you dated that terrible boy. But now it seems like our god has chosen you as its new vessel. I'm so proud of you" Her mother continued.
"I don't understand, will the changes stop?"
"Oh no. The old avatar dissapeared a few days ago. You will take its place. Sanjana, you have to get home quickly. Soon you won't be able to fit in a car anymore. I'll send Sanjay"
"Wait! I don't want be its avatar. And won't people think I look strange?"
"I'm sorry, I know you like the university. But the god has spoken and if you stay people will in the end just see you as an elephant. Right now only those who have been touched by the god will be able to recognize your true form. But once you start walking like an elephant they will see you as an elephant instead. You have a choice, come back home and become the avatar. Or stay in the city and people will treat you like an ordinary elephant"
