I wanted to draw another scene from my fic Iron Oxide again, so I decided to go with a scene from the latest chapter where Sonic carries Metal through the swamp. I wanted to capture some of the alien flora from the fic, as well as draw a better picture of Sonic's leg. The goal was to make it look very similar to the rest of him, yet clearly robotic. I think I could have made it look more robotic than it does here, so I may redesign it still. Also, Metal is holding the Chaos Emerald detector.There are a couple of technical problems with this piece, although the main problem is the perspective. This started off as a sketch I just kept adding to, so the perspective suffered. I need to draw a full illustration like this laid out with a proper perspective grid next time. I didn't plan this as well as I should have, so that's one lesson learned.
I also tried a couple of new shading techniques. Background objects are tedious, but I'm getting there. I tried to make the shading on Sonic and Metal smoother than normal, and I do like that effect. It took forever though, so I need to find a way to speed it up.

Oh...so thats how Sonic's robotized leg actually looks like...huh, perhaps it din't occur to me Sonic got his leg robotized along with this shoe...i find it interesting how even what ever piece of clothing they wear it also gets turned into metal...

I've actually had the same thought about Sonic's shoe--in the canon, roboticized characters seem to always get their clothing roboticized to them. I've brought it up a little in Iron Oxide, but Sonic is now in a position where he can only remove one shoe, and the other has basically replaced his foot in the roboticizer. Which in a way, is even worse than just normal roboticization because his shoe has become his foot!

i always though in the cannon universe where mobians get robotized with their cloths a bit sad and maybe a bit annoying cause now they will look like that for the rest of their lifes, it truly is such a sad and cruel fate D:

Oh yeah, I remember reading this part. I always like to visualize your fic in my mind and I like how you did the background. Although you are right about the perspective, it looks a bit confusing but besides that it looks beautiful!

I'm glad you like them! The trees were a little weird to figure out. Honestly, this whole scene was really weird to figure out because there's no real light source without the sun or moon. I tried to light everything from Metal's detector.

Well, now that you mention it, how dark would it be on that planet??? My brain kind of hurts trying to imagine it... xD The best I can come up is diving really deep in Subnautica with just a flashlight. But then we couldn't see the trees??? Maybe the other stars in the distance provide a little light?
I'm just going to pretend it's a very bright light Metal has on that detector before I give myself a headache trying to figure it out xD

Yeah, the light on the planet is one area of the story where I fudge reality a little. xD Without the sun or moon, everything would be literally pitch black. You couldn't see a single thing. I've worked around this somewhat by making the planets glow and having Metal illuminate things, but navigating would definitely be a lot harder than Sonic and Metal have experienced.

Eh, IMO perspective grids aren't as important in a natural scene without things like buildings that have rigid shapes where it's easy to tell when they're just a bit "off". I'd have handled the lighting differently, but good job with the scene!

You're absolutely right perspective isn't as important for a natural scene. Still, there are a couple of errors that bug me. Mainly, the rock and Sonic's feet don't quite align, but it could be worse.
And yeah, lighting this scene wasn't great. The problem is this is based off a fan fic, and it's a major plot point that there is no sun or moon on the planet they're on. So, there's really no light source except the backlight of the screen of the device Metal is holding. Unfortunately, this made things look weird because now the scene is light from below, which looks very wrong when placed outside, and I don't think I quite captured what I had in mind with the screen. I maybe should have just taken creative license with that, but oh well.
Out of curiosity, though, how would you have lit the scene? I'm always looking to improve, so feedback is always greatly appreciated!

Well, it looks like it's nighttime, so I'd first decide on a location for the moon and then include very little ambient light that wasn't from that direction - I'd also make the character's shadows a bit harder on the ground, though not as hard as if they were directly in the sun. The white outlines on the trees are a particularly curious choice - normally that suggests an extreme level of brightness, like the sun's glaring right on that object.

Thanks for the feedback, that definitely helps a lot. I think I might go grab some photos of outdoor scenes and practice drawing them before my next piece. It's always much harder when you add a background in, but this is a skill I really want to master, so I'll need to practice a lot.

I'm glad you think so! I still might tweak the design just a little to make it more obvious. I'm thinking of hollowing out the inside of his shoe and adding a screw in his ankle, kind of like Metal's foot, to make it look more robotic.

That could work. But you don't have to push the robotic look too far, really, since it's a roboticized limb, not one that was built like Metal Sonic was. It gives you a bit more artistic freedom. Though I agree a joint of some kind in the foot would make it look less rigid.

That's a good point! In fact, it would probably be a good idea not to make it too robotic for that very reason. I do think I'll add some joints though, since it doesn't look like he could move it the way it is currently designed.

My suggestion; look at the roboticized Mobians in the SonicSatAm series and the earlier Archie comics for ideas. Sonic was even roboticized at one point, and a Robot Master at another point.(Poor guy's been through a lot!)

Honestly, I use peer pressure to make myself write. xD I have public release dates for each chapter, and because I know there are people counting on me to update on time, I feel like I can't let them down. xD I don't think I would have gotten so far if I wasn't holding myself to these dates. There have been so many times I didn't feel like writing but did anyway because of the deadline, and I'm glad it's kept me motivated.
