After my experience with that latest Iron Oxide, I wanted to refine a couple of techniques in a more controlled setting. So, I drew this simple image of Sonic to try it out. I wanted to give this as painted a look as possible, and I think I'm getting there. The texture is still too smooth, I think, but I think I have better control of color this way. I actually drew this all on one layer again, which is a good way to get smoother results.I think I will try this painting style on a more complex, full scene metonic picture next.

I think you succeeded with the painterly style here! Though some texture would help it more. You did this on one layer, huh? Is it impossible to do it with multiple layers and have the same look?

Yeah, I think I need to download some brushes with more texture. I usually end up overworking it so much that the texture gets blended out.
I think it might be possible to do on more than one layer depending on what program/techniques you use. I usually use one layer to help with the blending.

Your work shows! I started out traditional then switch to digital, but I do still feel like I have more control with a pencil in my hand it's great to have every color in the world in one program then owning 100's of pencils or marker.

I do think it's easier to sketch traditionally and faster too. You're usually confined to a smaller space when drawing digitally based on the side of your tablet. I often will draw the initial sketch in paper, then line/color it digitally.

That's what I use to do in the past but my room i such a clutter mess with other art supplies I decided to stop getting dozens of sketch books and just draw all digital. My sewing supplies take up almost all my space. XD

And yeah, I've been trying to figure out the finer details of digital painting for awhile now. I've seen so many inspiring pieces from other artists done in this style that I really want to master it! I'll let you know if I ever figure it out. xD

Thanks a bunch! I'm glad you think so. Painted style is definitely really hard. It requires a very solid understanding of how light works, and it also requires you know all the brush settings. I am still struggling to find the right balance between texture and smoothness for this style. The finished work always ends up too rough or too smooth. I think I just need to master SAI settings more.
