Yeah, I just answered to you like this because I'm still bitter about the name change.
Let me give you a proper longer answer:
1. there was a Captain Marvel character at DC Comics. A vintage superhero they acquired from Fawcett comics, this one here. A magical superman, if you will. A kid named Billy Batson yelled SHAZAM! to turn into this superhero. There's been all kinds of variations, like Billy's sister getting the same powers and turning into Mary Marvel, and another kid becoming Captain Marvel Jr.
2. Marvel came up with their own Captain Marvel since they're named Marvel as well. Their version was like Green Lantern from DC, alien-powered humans with scifi-powers flying around in bright costumes. Various characters have become Captain Marvel since then, and yes, the original one was named Mar-Vell. A supporting character from those old comics, Miss Marvel, is currently now the main Captain Marvel in the comics.
3. there's been issues between Marvel and DC Comics over the years regarding that name. It was finally decided Marvel would keep the name and DC had to come up with something else, despite their version being the older original one. So now they renamed the Billy Batson Captain Marvel "Shazam", which I dislike and find very stupid since that's the name he uses to transform. So he technically can never say his own name now!!
That's why I answered to you like that andΒ why I wrote I'm still bitter about it. Billy Batson has been named Captain Marvel since 1939 (!!!!) and I've been a fan for like 20 years or so since I knew him, and I'm not gonna start calling him Shazam now!
That would be like if tomorrow Marvel is forced to rename Wolverine and call him "Snikt" since that's the sound he makes whenever his claws pop out...
There! The entire story!

Yep. The one I drew here, the DC Captain Marvel/Shazam is as old as Superman and Batman! And he's the one that had to get the name changed... sigh..
(The Marvel version is from the late 1960s')
