Description HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICKEY!!

Yep! Today is Mickey 80th Anniversary (officially, i know he was created before Nov. 18th but it is his official b-day as Steamboat Willie was the first real cartoon to feature synchronized sound!!!)

HAPPY 80th ANNIVERSARY! All Sonic fans should know this! As Felix (the cat ) and Mickey Mouse were the original inspirations which used Yuji Naka & Naoto Ōshima to create the blue bur :'3
so i'll say Long Live the little mouse!

im not a big fan of Modern age mickey (or his cartoon tv shows, i prefer the animated short movies) and old Mickey with his big white face (mouth and eyes in the same palette color) was a lot better than the current pinkysh face with small irises...

Anyway, i hope ya enjoy it!
Watch a mickey cartoon tonight

and i made it kinda wallpaper sized if you click DOWNLOAD!

Wow! Very sweet! Old Mickey is pretty awesome. Sometimes the newer animation style of older shows really bugs me too, like the new Tom and Jerry cartoons (got some for my nieces. thought they were the original Chuck Jones stuff and was really disappointed they were new style instead.). Anywho, great job!

Yeah, I always find much of the old school animation a lot more timeless and ages pretty well. And some of the recent computer animated stuff don't ages that well...

Glad you liked this drawing!^^

Nice pic. You emulated the style and texturing very well. The film strip borders are also a nice touch. My only complaint is his left foot, that's slanted to the opposite direction he's facing.

Unbelievable it took me till only recently to watch this short. I like Mickey (I actually prefer the modern design), even if he became kinda generic later on. In fact a lot of 'everymen' evolved this way before being cast out of the spotlight (par maybe Porky, who avoided this by becoming a fall-guy, though even then he was basically retired by the late 50s), ironically enough Sonic seemed to go through a similar phase recently. Recent stuff tries to make Mickey a more wholesome character though (eg. Runaway Brain).

While I am more a Looney Tunes fan, there are a few Disney shorts that are favorites of mine. A shame we get little of either now.

im also more of a Looney Tunes fan but i definitively love some Disney shorts!
Steambot willie being my all time favorite Mickey mouse cartoon!

also worth checkin' are all of the shorts featured in the 90s game Mickey Mania [link]

The thing with Disney is that i don't really like all of their characters (for example i never really liked Goofy or Pluto... dunno why..) however with Looney tunes i love most of them (from Elmer to Speedy, damn' even Lola Bunny to some extent!!)

Ah, right, I've played the PSOne version of that (Mickey's Wild Adventure).

While their not as high up in my faves as some of the Looney Tunes I like some of the characters, mostly just the mainstream ones used in the shorts (Pluto is actually perhaps my fave, my single piece of Disney art is of him).

My preference is usually a versatile character with a complex personality, Pluto, Mickey, Porky and the in-between versions of Bugs and Daffy (after they stopped being one-dimentional psychopaths and before they merely had their positive and negative traits enthasised respectfully) are good examples. I don't really like one-gag characters, I can see why Goofy didn't really take your interest in this case (even if later media developed him and some of the others to an extent).

While Lola's unpopularity is kinda exagerated, I can see why she didn't fare too well, as she was created more or less purely on the idea of imputing a '.C.' girl character and garnering female attention rather than making a character with a compelling personality and aspects (it probably didn't help she wasn't all that 'looney', in which case they probably would have been better off 'romoting' some of their previous females such as Granny or Penelope Pussycat (which they actually had started doing before this period).

Penelope a bit more developed...are you talking about one of my favorites "Carrotblanca" ?

on the other hand, i still like one-gag characters on the Looney tunes side. for example the Dodo (both the old black & white short and the colored remake)!

E-122-Psi In reply to theEyZmaster [2009-03-12 01:18:59 +0000 UTC]

Bingo. One of the more innovative revival shorts.

Some are good while some are rather unsympathetic and merely there as foils to another more loveable character. I can like some of them, I'm just saying for the most part I prefer the more versatile ones (mainly ones that have a prominant running role and set persona, but are still capable of trying lots of different scenarios, Bugs was usually a protaganist but on occasions could be a jerkass or fall-guy, I think Daffy would have worked better if they had kept him prominantly a screwball/con-artist and used other roles such as Jones' fall-guy as occasional additions to his personality like said Bugs variations (McKimson and Freleng's 1950s work is sorta within this concept for both characters). Pluto is perhaps a fair Disney example, often playing Mickey's mischevious dog, but on other occasions playing a Donald-ish fall-guy role or lovesick puppy.

Wow, Sonic was inspired by Mickey Mouse O_o

Nope, I didn't know that!

And who was Tails inspired by...? Pluto?
...cause... like ... Pluto is... like ... orange and Tails is ... also like, orange and... ah forgett about it....

Though I saw a drawing by Zody, explaining that Sonic original was supposed to be a rabbit, and Tails female... o_O

Though I don't know any other source for that...
Now I know from somewhere that Eggman's original design was designed for a completely different purpose,
and he was wearing pyjamas.

would be quite interesting to get ahold on some of the scrapped stories, and beta-versions of character-concepts...
especially if they're in contrast to the final version...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theEyZmaster In reply to UltraTheHedgetoaster [2008-11-19 09:39:21 +0000 UTC]

well, tails was just designed like Manga anthro characters from the early 90s (samurai pizza cats, and lots of others!)..and i suppose the orange was to be more realistic compared to Blue hedgehog sonic!

and the rabbit part, sonic wasn't suppose to be a rabbit, they were lots of characters created when they were trying to find SEGA mascot back then..amongst others the more interesting choice were the rabbit guy (with a complete different look, name, "powers",etc.. which got scrapped, a rolling armadillo which was re-used in SEGASONIC and later CHAOTIX, a power hungry science professor in pajamas which became the main enemy for the winner, a blue hedgehog using a speed based engine. (they kept some ideas from the platforming rabbit game prototype and the rolling ball thing from the armadillo)
that's it i guess!

and i know Uekawa-san said Big, as a peaceful creature living in his kind of world, was based on totoro [link]
he even used an umbrella in Sonic heroes!

UltraTheHedgetoaster In reply to theEyZmaster [2010-12-15 02:10:30 +0000 UTC]

So you could say, Sonic's parents were a rabbit and an armadillo?
Heh, the 'inspiration' for Big looks nice.

Yes! I have a habbit of keeping things - at least unless I get the time to sort them out! I never throw old stuff away without at least taking a quick look at it.

In fact, I regularly go through the deviations at the other end of the "newest deviations"-display, before dA can delete them from my inbox for being "older than a year".
Basically a "last chance" to comment on stuff I didn't get around to before.
Of course this is something that can't work if you're subscribed to 300 people or something.
But I'm very restrictive with my subs, so I can eventually go through a decent amount of things.

And everything from before 2009 - when dA announced they'd start deleting inbox stuff - I've got backupped into a separate inbox-folder, and it's obviously paying off!

dA deletes older stuff than a year? Man, I need to check out some of the older 3224 deviations I have in my inbox to check out at some point too! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UltraTheHedgetoaster In reply to theEyZmaster [2010-12-15 19:34:12 +0000 UTC]

If you put old stuff into a "folder" in your inbox, it will be spared!
Be aware that "only" 10.000 messages can fit into one folder, then .... you'll just need to make a second one.

You can always save all your deviations into a new inbox folder by clicking "select all", then "move". (First, you should create a "new folder" of course.)
This also works for messages, journals, etc. ...

If you're too lazy to look for "new folder", "select all", "move" then you can just do a CTRL+F search on your inbox and they'll show up instantly.
