I use Gimp and a mouse :3
I only use the default brushes and stuff. for the body I use a large hard brush and play with its size, then i put it on a low smudging level and then smudge the horse completely. I follow the horses muscule structure though so it doesn't look like a blob and then i just highlight and shadow its body where its needed
