Description This is my entry for this weeks stock challenge at *ManipulateThis . I decided to go with a sort of medieval Christmas theme.

I would really appreciate advance criticism on this deviation. I don't get the chance to create and practice daily so I feel like my successes are more hit and miss instead of being consistant. If you feel differently, please let me know. I'm still entering the "beginner" category at *ManipulateThis , but maybe I'm ready for "intermediate?".

UPDATE 12-21-06: I've remove some of the texture from the figures to make them "pop" out a little bit more without losing the "old illustration" look I wanted for this deviation. A couple of people suggested this.

This is such a fun idea, the long held tradition of mistletoe igniting a "kiss." I like that you've got the knight on bended knee waiting for his "gift" from the maiden. The only things that I note that I might do differently is the edges on the left side of the knight and right of the maiden-are a bit too undefined, in my thinking. I see you're going for the sense that they're in the room and not just pasted on-but I'd want a tad more definition in those two spots. Also, good on lightening the texture areas of the people. Maybe a bit more please on the knight, he's "unmatched" in comparison to the maiden. Of course, this is just MY opinion, take it for what it cost you.

Beautiful! Love the whole look & concept! The filters applied look great.

Yes, still beginner at the time. With a lot of help from deviants who gave me some real constructive help, I was able to pull this deviation off and learned more about textures. Thanks for the comment.

You would be chosen as a book illustrator
if only the various editors could see such work.

You know, when I entered college so many, many, many years ago, I started off to be a teacher who wrote and illustrated children's books, therefore English (especially writing) and art were my major and second major. But friends sorta talked me into getting a degree in commercial art instead. Many, many, many, many, many moons later, I returned to fine tune my fine art, which is why I'm able to thinking like a commercial artist but do images like a fine artist. I'm glad to know I still have the illustrator in me.

this is what I like the most from your gallery
well composed and looks like a beautiful painting
good luck for the contest

oh just have read you comment... maybe just adding a bit of a white shadow on characters, so the grapes can contrast a little more from the background ? Not much,(palying with opacity will tell), a little blurry too. Anyway, still good as is.
And can't tell about intermediate as it is the first deviation I look at.

Thanks so much for your comments! I am very proud of the way this came out. This has been a very favoritable deviation and I would love to offer it as a print, but unfortunately the model won't allow it.

Generally, I don't do romance well and I stay away from it, but *Cobweb-stock and *lockstock prince and princess couple photod first inspired me for the first couple that I did; and when I saw the mistletoe theme photo, well, I just had to do it again.

Hmm, if you feel you are not good enough for intermediate yet I might as well put myself back in beginners...

What happened to me was when I once I won the beginners I started entering into intermediate. But I have no idea if it is right for me either. There are no rules. And it looks like the competition is getting better every week.

I like this one you did. You look well at details.

TheFantaSim In reply to evacorges [2006-12-19 11:51:27 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about moving up to one category then staying in that category afterwards. I feel I have to do the same thing once I move up to intermediate, and I just don't feel that confident yet. My successes are too hit and miss, but that's because I don't have the time to put in as much practice as others do. Many people I know at DA do a manip a day, or at least several in a week.

But, you're right, there are no rules at Manipulate This. Maybe we should ask if we must stay in one level, or if we can go between levels from week to week according to how we feel about the deviation.

And thanks for the compliment on this one.

this is very pretty . I agree with what someone said before about having less texture over the models thoguh

TheFantaSim In reply to faestock [2006-12-19 12:34:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment on the texture. I know what you both mean, and I explained already that without it, they popped out too much, but I'm going to redo it and see if I can improve. I really appreciate your honest criticism and the nice compliment.

...I like it Sassy...perhaps some less textures on the model or no textures so they would pop more of the background would help kick this nice pic up a notch...just an idea...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheFantaSim In reply to caddman [2006-12-19 12:32:34 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean. The texture on them was really done at the very last (and truthfully, I started getting tired working of this deviation and just wanted to get to a satisfied point just so that I could submit it!), but without it, they were too bright, popped out "too" much and looked too "modern", and that wasn't the over all look I wanted for this deviation. But since you and someone else mentioned it, I'll go back over it and tone it down some. I like to make this one a print.

And I so happy for the honest criticism.

...Thanks Sassy...try this idea for It works for me...add a new layer and set at maybe 40%, than use the paint bucket and fill the layer...I use black and also white and make adjust to the layer trying different settings...example--screen also can play with the channels like turning off red...now try move this layer maybe at top and etc...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheFantaSim In reply to caddman [2006-12-20 23:00:16 +0000 UTC]

That sounds good. I never thought of changing the channels.
