Description Your favorite fictional character doesn't have a voice.

That voice you hear in your head? That's not his or her actual voice. It is simply the voice your subconscious assigned to that specific character, just as it is giving voice to these words you are reading right now.

That's always been the fun thing about comic books, and in particular, superheroes in general. In the 90s, they came off the page, so we never truly knew what our favorite heroes sounded like. For all we knew, Spider-Man was Don Knotts. The Hulk was Patrick Warburton. Doctor Strange was Gilbert Gottfried, and my personal favorite, Charlie Day was all four members of the Fantastic Four. The point is, there has never been an end-all, be-all for a superhero voice.

Except for Batman.

Kevin Conroy IS Batman.

Like most 90s kids, he became ingrained into my mind as the voice of Batman. I could never pick up a comic, play a video game, or defend Gotham City with my action figures without his voice in my mind. This Juilliard graduate theater actor with only a handful of soap operas and TV movies under his belt became so much more than the voice for the Dark Knight, but he became the voice of our next step towards growing up. If a performance this strong, this powerful, was capable of taking the art of animation and make it something not only truly serious, but beautiful, maybe the rest of us can be allowed to expand out of our comfort zones, and become a little more serious as well.

Thought Kevin left us far too early, we can all at least smile and be grateful at the 30 year career that we were lucky enough to have him in our lives. We have those episodes of BTAS, the Arkham games, the DC Animated movies, shorts, as well as Batman Beyond, Justice League, JLU, and many, many other pieces of art he lent his voice to. That was his gift to us, and our gift to him will be to always have him in our hearts.

Your favorite fictional character doesn't have a voice.

But mine does.

Rest easy now, Vengeance. Rest easy, Dark Knight.

Though you are now silence, we shall always be listening...
