Description I built the DSC phasers. As I only got angled photos instead of blueprints, I kinda eyeballed some proportions and details, but I think it turned out nice.

It's not a bad show. Not as good as TOS or ENT, but far better than TNG.

Great work, I'm not a big fan of the DSC ship but the I give them mad props on the prop design.  In my opinion, this version and Star Trek 5's Assault Phaser are a close tie for best update to the classic hand phaser to come out of any official tv/movies releases.

Yupp, also Pike's hand laser.

What did you do to get the blue illuminated light?

It's a render, I used a glowing texture.

This is the only real design element that I like, from what I've seen shown for Discovery. I like how it combines the Pike era laser with the Kirk era phaser. It's the only visual acknowledgement I've yet seen that this takes place in the prime timeline, or anywhere the date they claim the show is set.

While visually pleasing, I'm not a fan of the use of the Delta Star as a design element here. As everyone except the producers of Discovery, knows, that symbol isn't adopted fleetwide, until the late 2270's.

That said, it is a nice design. You did an nice job rendering it here, and I hope to by a replica, when and if they become available.

The best parts of Discovery so far are the little things like the phaser prop. I wish they went bigger on the emitter and dropped the insert so it better bridges the phase pistol and laser pistol, but it's still great. You model looks really good too.

Will you be doing the phaser rifle? Now that is a great prop.

The thing to me about Discovery is how people seem to complain about this or about that.

They argue like Tellarites.  They don't argue for reason, they simply argue.

Spock having a sister.  Incredible revelation, but they forget how much of Spock's history no one knew about until he was forced to confront them?  T'Pring, the woman he was betrothed to.  I'Chaya, his "teddy bear".  Not to mention that the renouned Ambassador Sarek and his wife were Spock's parents.  You saw how shocked Kirk was over that.

This with gripes over the ship -- presumably commissioned in 2255 -- being more advanced than the Enterprise -- commissioned in 2245.  Not just the Discovery, but everything else such as the technology.  And yet we look at the phasers, mostly a different hand grip and emitter array BUT something that looks like metal instead of plastic.  Basically taking classic designs and modernizing them.  Keeping them futuristic even from today's standpoint, yet keeping them true to form from the good ol' days.

I'd say 99% of the gripes over the look of Discovery is like the lunar landing hoax conspiracy theory.  If you actually take the time to look at them, then you see there is in reality nothing wrong.  Especially since I don't see com badges, holodecks or replicators that are found in the 24th century.  The hologram of Sarek looks like the same resolution as R2-D2's holographic projector, but no where near the resolution and being solid as the holodeck -- let alone the EMH.  Despite the fact the rec room on The Practical Joker was in a way a holodeck, and setting aside the episode Unexpected.

I agree with what you wrote, it's window dressing and blank spaces, but the biggest complaint I've read is over the new aesthetic for the Klingons. At first they said different houses on different planets should look and act differently, which makes great sense, and gets away from the homogeneous cultures we almost always see in Trek. So, ancient Klingons would be the only bald ones wearing leather plate mail, except that might not be the case because they made a statement which may indicate all Klingons are hairless, which contradicts all the other series, and the story about Kahless making the first bat'leth from a strand his hair. It's rather annoying because it sounds and looks like they are turning the Klingons into the Hirogen. I want to see what they actually do with them since there is no clear answer just yet.

Agreed since even early on with the Klingons from Star Trek Into Darkness is also explainable by a little thing called diversity.

Well the Phaser look awesome, but how will the show itself pan out. I heard the rifles look like ENT MACO Pulse rifles.

thefirstfleet In reply to Scattergunsniper [2017-08-06 07:02:56 +0000 UTC]

They look like a mix between the MACO rifles and the TOS Type 3 phaser rifle.

You are very welcome I love your work; but I do have one question concerning the arrow head logo seen on the phaser?  I thought in the original series the “arrowhead” insignia was not the universal symbol for all of Starfleet. In fact, at that time, it was only the symbol for the crew of the Enterprise and other crews of other ships had different symbols. Since Discovery takes place 10 years prior to the original Star Trek series why are they using that design?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thefirstfleet In reply to bjmaxvin67 [2017-08-06 07:07:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I thought too that the arrwohead / warp delta / whatever is the symbol of the Enterprise herself. I think it got retconned over the years.

Here is a chart that I found on deviantart with all the original Constitution class uniform insignia designs. At any rate I will sit and wait to see what Star Trek Discovery is like before I make an opinion.
