Description So this doesn't exactly fit with my current timeline, but I don't want to wait to introduce this pair properly so I'm just going to pretend that time exists at 4SS the same way it does in my head (a non-linear and entirely unimportant construct that serves no purpose other than to stress me out)

For story and time ignoring purposes this would occur sometime after Tris returns from the 2018/19 The White December. In real time Shale shouldn't be born until like September/October 2019 but I'm impatient so wiggling timelines so she and the two colts can be at 4SS in time to be part of the 2019 story line.

When Tris asked him to come help with the arriving weanlings he hadn't thought much about it. They were all going to be Tris's horses anyway. Sure he'd been there when Tris had been arranging the breedings and he was definitely getting more into horses and riding but the Ober horses were meant to do this bonding thing and while Tris seemed to be all about it he wasn't.

The two white marked colts Tris led from the truck were cute and his developing eye for horses told him they had good confirmation and would probably grow up to be pretty handsome stallions.

Tris already seemed taken with the pair, sweet talking them and scratching at chests and whithers.

Knowing there was a third weanling to unload Jamie walked up the ramp and approached the dark filly. She almost blended into the deep dark grey shadows, only given away by four flashy white socks and a big white stripe down her face. Reaching out somewhat timidly Jamie let his hand brush against the filly's dark cheek and met her curious blue eyes.

Unclipping her from the tie he led her down the ramp so he could see her better. The sunlight shone off her dark steely grey coat giving off slight hints of blue as it reflecting the sky.

His sharp inhale drew Tris's attention and they looked up from the colts. "She's a stunning little lady isn't she," they remarked with a knowing smile. "You know both breeds pick their partners?"

Jamie baulked. "Both breeds? I thought all of them were Obers?"

"Shale's classed as an Admiralskaka, so she's a little different," Tris explained still smiling.

"Shale..." Jamie was stuck on the name, just as he was stuck on the filly.

She pushed her velvety muzzle into his face and breathed hard on him, as if giving him her scent while she took in his.

A little startled by her closeness Jamie stepped back and the filly followed him, nosing at his hoodie and then his jean pockets.

"I think she likes you. Or did you fill your pockets with treats?" Tris asked laughing and startling the two colts who shuffled their feet then crowded back in close.

"I didn't!" Jamie huffed putting one hand on the filly's chest to get her to stop pushing.

She took a small step back and looked up at him offended.

Jamie relented and offered her his hands, palms up and open.

Shale pricked her ears and lowered her muzzle into those waiting hands, leaning heavily into them.

Jamie was shocked at just how much he wanted to have Shale as his partner. Meeting his few other horses hadn't gone like this! Shale wasn't his she was Tris's.

Jamie looked up at Tris in a panic, dreading knowing they were going to take Shale away from him.

Tris was smiling, eyes scrunched happily. "She's all yours Jamie."

Jamie couldn't speak just gaped at Tris, fighting the feeling that tears were trying to creep into his eyes.

"I had been thinking one of the colts might take to you but they do tend to have a preference for handlers of the opposite gender," Tris said going back to scratching the colts. "You better take good care of her or there'll be hell to pay. I've heard rumours about black Obers going missing from stables... I'm fairly sure its just rumour and ghost stories but you never know."

Jamie's heart clenched suddenly at the thought of losing the filly he'd just met. Shale pushed her muzzle into his hoodie and he scratched at her ears. He wouldn't let that happen. He was going to help her shine. They were going to shine together.
