Gouache paints with coloured pencil on coloured matte board
The text along the "spine" was added after via PhotoShop, while the text on the cover is part of the painting.

*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all my Potter art work building up (hopefully) to having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***

From the first day I started this series of illustrations, and I decided each cover was going to be done on a different coloured matte board to give each book a coloured theme... and going back and forth about which color the first book should be... even going so far as re-doing the second book after realizing I'd chosen the wrong colour... this book was one I always knew would be brown. It's one of the books I had firmly imagined in my mind's eye. While I love the series as a whole, this individual book was the first to truly grab me and pull me in to the world of Harry Potter. As for the cover painting itself... I'm generally pleased with it - there will always be things I wish I'd done differently on all my paintings. But I was really happy with how this one came together.

absolutely awesome!!! I have a weak spot for thi book, too...

I truly love your take on Fudge and Trelawney and the Dementors, especially!! The composition is really cool, leading gently the eye and the 4 paintings add a nice touch!

There's just something about this story that "different" from the rest. It's hard to explain. I'm so glad you enjoy my takes on the characters... that is a large part of the fun for me - showing "my version" of them. And I look forward to showing more

I find your comment interesting as I thought Prisoner of Azkaban is where the movies started to fall off.  Personally I think Goblet of Fire was the worse movie of all of them...

I wasn't talking about the movies. While I enjoy them for what they are, when it comes to my art, I am always referring to the books

At long last, back to doing more artwork on "Prisoner of Azkaban"

I've first read "Prisoner of Azkaban" 4 years ago, before seeing the film 8 times now.
Me and my sister Beulah think that Alfonso Cauron definitly saved the Harry Potter films with"Prisoner of Azkaban", because I have strong opinions of the poor job Chris Columbus did on the first 2 films.
But now, I'm currently reading "Goblet of Fire" at the moment.

There are things I liked about the movie of Prisoner of Azkaban, particularly in the art direction and designs, but I think the first 2 movies by Columbus were a couple of the most faithful adaptations of books to movies I've ever seen and technically the best of of all the movies for that aspect. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the Azkaban movie - I enjoy all the movies for what they are, but it was the first dramatic departure from the source material, which rubbed the "purest" in me the wrong way.
