Inks by Me.

Original pencils: fav.me/d3it5z1

Tools: Fineliner and copic

This one deserves a bit of an explanation. I did this for my Mark II portfolio I had been preparing for 2014 and broke a golden rule of portfolio building - never ink test pages (I'll be doing a blog on the subject for later this year). However I broke this rule for 2 reasons:

1. Ivan's is a sound artist so there's was no danger of there being fundamental issues in the pencils reflecting in the inks. If there are errors in the art, it would be down to my skill, and boy are there errors!!!
2. A piece like this is a must have if you're building a portfolio to gain work, especially with the big boys Marvel and DC. They're not just interested in action scene or even mundane scenes of people talking at a bar. They're very interested in city scenes and technical things like buildings, cars, etc. as these crop up in spades when working on a standard comic. This was the most complete example of such a scene I have seen to date.

As for my execution, it was extremely challenging working on the background, probably the most challenging piece I've ever inked. In places I tried a ruler, in others a tried freehand but again and again I kept getting angles wrong with messed with perspectives, argh! The distance background was very troublesome 'cos the pencils where heavy handed rather than sharp and clear so it was a minefield deciphering it and in the end I had to wing it.

I did doubt sometimes if I had pulled it off but I had several reassurances that I had managed it and should include it.

All that isn't to say I don't like this one. I do. I'm proud to say I got through this one, errors and all, and will be doing at least 2 more (I like doing sequentials in 3's as a set which is the recommended number).

At the reviews there was only one thing that was picked up on and I'm sure most of you will spot it. I did fix it in photoshop but can't find the darn file! When I do I'll update this but in the meantime you can have fun spotting it.

Anyway, live and learn and I did Thanks to Ivan for letting me ink his art

That page is brilliant - both pencils and inks.  Are you still working at Medikidz, btw?

wow so awesome hard to believe this all done by hand you must have tons of patience.
i could never attempt anything like this by hand.I do not have the steadiness to pull this type of work off.
im so glad i can at least ink digitally cause any mess up can be fixed lol but keep up the great work.

Top left corner should be spot black area?....
Great work, it's very clean, buildings look good, as do the vehicles.
Your shading techniques work really well on these pencils and really improves the piece.
I particularly like the shading on Spidey in the first 3 panels, makes him look really menacing

which top left corner? It was actually something on one of the buildings.

Very top left, behind the first panel, the building behind spidey in the large top panel? It looks like there are little x marks in the pencils?

Is the original mistake you're referring to the billboard on the building on the right side of the street in the center panel?

OMG! you're so right!!! I think when I converted to blue line they were too light to be noticed. Good spot! I'll have to fix that.

The original mistake is actually the main building in panel 2. The comment I kept getting was about how the lines don't fade out uniformly towards the bottom (some lines are longer than others). Funny enough no one mentioned the window's weren't of consistent sizes. That inconsistency was the result of using a ruler :/

Strange what a new set of eyes can catch sometimes

I wouldn't have noticed until you pointed it out but I can see where you mean I think, above the head of the gunman leading back towards the cop car?

Sorry panel 3 I mean, but yeah, there are lots of little mistakes in the buildings of the main panel too.
