I know it was not part of my queue, but dad and I watched the Desolation of Smaug...and dad have NEVER liked any Fantasy movie before! He enjoyed it so much and thought that Thranduil was cool (and he said that he would have reacted in the same way) so...yeah.I know it is full of inaccuracies...please forgive me.

A lovely portrait of the elvenking. The Hobbit is one of my favourite books, and though the movies so far have gotten so much wrong (my mum is a Tolkien fan and HATES the movies, not so much the LOTR trilogy) I like them too. I'm loving the looks of a lot of the dwarves - Thorin, Fili, Kili and Bofur especially, and Gloin and Balin are the most proper dwarves - and Thranduil has been perfectly cast when you consider he is Legolas' father.
I've been getting really into Thorin/Thranduil pairing since the films came out too.

Gloin is probably the closest to his book equivalent out of all the dwarves in appearance, with Dwalin next. Balin is a very lovable character in the book - a typical kindly old dear - and I am pleased at how well he came across in the movie. Peter Jackson has taken a lot of liberties with the characters, Kili in particular looks really un-dwarfish, and Fili and Thorin too. But he has done a lot more character development on characters like Bofur and Bifur.
I would recommend reading the book if you haven't already. There are a lot of scenes which were changed or glossed over in the films, particularly when they met Beorn. Its much more wonderful and humorous, but doesn't explain where Gandalf keeps running off to, and there is no Galadriel, Saruman, or even Radagast (<3 this wizard). It's my mum's all-time favourite books, and has been since she read it over 40 years ago. My mum wouldn't class herself as a fantasy fan like me, but Tolkien is different. Maybe it has the same effect on your dad.

Desolation of Smaug is pretty awesome, I enjoyed it much more than the first one x'3 you should watch it sometime soon!
