Now we're talkin'! First off, let me just say that Spider-Man should totally be with Mary Jane-- PERIOD. Now that that's outta the way, let me praise the awesomeness that is the team of Spider-Man (in his symbiote black uniform) and Black Cat...They just look freakin' cool. Black Cat is a hot character, obviously-- but more importantly, Spider-Man had reinvented his look in comics at the time. Fans said boo, it'll never last or be well-received. They were wrong. That outfit is clearly the second greatest in his closet, right behind the classic original (obviously). Marvel had redesigned a lot of the looks of their characters in the 80s-- just check out my Storm pic from a few days ago to see another popular 80s choice.
It was a cool time in comics-- sales were steadily moving up, superheroes were in the mainstream, and things looked pretty bright for comics and the new generation of creators coming in-- Art Adams, Adam Hughes, Byrne at his finest, Perez on Crisis, Mike Zeck... a lot of these guys had been around before, but it wasn't until the 80s that they hit legendary status. It clearly inspired me, and of course the Image boys.
As a team and a couple they were cool, too-- it was the most bizarre of Peter's relationships, what with she not even LIKING Peter but loving the Spider... and seeing them take on foes together was a nice change of pace. I'm really pleased that Black Cat is coming back into the Spider-continuity of late... and that the black costume is back on Spidey. I've MISSED it. It just looks so cool. Movie tie-in or no, it's freakin' awesome.
I really want to draw these two again. Maybe I'll sneak them in as cameos on other "favorites" pieces. All I know is, I don't have it out of my system on these two... not by a long shot.

Maybe it's cause I came into comics in the 90's when she was nothin but a whiny bitch trying to get Pete to stop being spiderman but I can't stand mary jane. I would love to see him end up with Felicia. She's a much deeper and complex character and so much hotter. Thanks for this pic.

I dig Black Cat, but Mary Jane is infinitely more interesting.

yeah I dig thir teamups they are always written well together and back in the 80's the saga of the blackcostume and thet're relatiosip was a great twist for spidey. I love the new back in black saga spanning all the spidey books and the avengers books. Unfortunately Black Cat is with the new ultra lame Heroes for Hire and they ummm suck lol I'm sorry but a HFH without Luke Cage or Iron Fist? and working for Iron-Man?? sorry not the placeblack cat needs to be but her new relationship with the puma is pretty cool.

Honestly, I haven't read the new Heroes for Hire, so I can't speak one way or the other. It didn't really appeal to me on premise or in the artwork. But hey-- not every comic has to be aimed at me, I just hope it hits its demographic and does well! What's good for comics is good for me!

yeah I feel the same way except this was just so..forced I mean they're were tons more taga along heroes in the marvel u who could have been the new HFH but these guys just dont cut it. I honestly am only into Shang Chi and Black Cat the rest could just I duno fade back into obscurity and I honestly wouldnt care

hehehehe thanks for the kind words-- I disagree on the MJ thing being a mistake for the most part. My main complaint with MJ has been the actress involved in playing her in the movies.
Black Cat IS awesome, though-- the latest Kevin Smith-penned miniseres with her and Spider-Man was a GREAT read, with amazing artwork throughout.

I absolutely love the black costume as well, and hate the way they wouldn't use it simply because they implied MJ was 'raped' by Venom...even though they didn't say that that was what happened, it was implied (at least the way EYE read it) and it takes away a lot of innocence from t he Spider-Man world, as WELL as killing off a wonderful design work...in a way, Black-Costume-Spider-man is a separate commodity from Traditional Spider-Man and in my opinion it was FOOLish to defile the costume by making it a rapist...the costume is a symbolic representation of Spider-Man, and they turned it into something wrong and ugly. Imagine if Super-Man's cape molested children. Superman could never wear a cape again, I bet. well, maybe never is 10 years, if Webby is able to wear this suit again...
