good lord, i wish i could do teeth. >.< sorry, i just noticed that (all my pics have closed mouths for that reason). do you have any tips for doing them? i can never get the shading right, it seems. >.>"

I've never been taught shading or highlighting in art.

I can tell you what I do. Shading is very easy, itΒ΄s just filling the sketch from the lighter shadow to the darker. I Advice to change the pic to black and white, itΒ΄s easier to see...leave blank spaces for the highlights, and in the end, just after all shading and last details are made you use a kneadable eraser to bring up the bright in those blank spaces and reflexes. I use cotton balls to shade, and those sticks with small cotton balls to clean ears(sorry, donΒ΄t know the name in English) to the shading details. I guess itΒ΄s all. IΒ΄m not an expert, IΒ΄ll learn a lot more this year in college...

I think you are referring to Q tips, the sticks with the small cotton balls. At least I think that is what you are talking about.

Okay...
You should try to use one harder pencil first to make the shadow areas, use some cotton ball to fade it. Then you applie one softer pencil for the darker areas, and use the cotton ball again. Going from the lighter areas to the darker ones. I donΒ΄t know how it says in Enlish, but, IΒ΄ll try to explain. See those things to clean ears inside, the stick with two small cotton balls? ThatΒ΄s really good for details on shades! You could use a kneadable eraser, itΒ΄s really good to make the light on the drawing.
