Description
from my tumblr post on an au idea:
Ereri AU where Eren has leukemia, and goes to the hospital for regular blood transfusions. He’s always super impatient and restless while getting it, and the nurse that works with him, Levi, starts getting annoyed and so comes up with different ways to distract the boy. Eventually Eren picks up origami, and it turns into a habit- Eren bringing in various different types of origami paper, and Levi teaching him how to fold various things while Eren gets his transfusion. One week it would be a lily from a pale pink paper, and a few weeks later, an energetic frog from a floral print paper. Levi’s always been someone who’s organized and has plans for things; while Eren has appointments, they always end up doing something new each time. It’s endearing, exciting, intriguing, something Levi hasn’t understood before.
Eren’s leukemia starts getting worse, however, and soon he’s hospitalized permanently. His condition doesn’t improve despite treatment, and eventually the doctors give up and tell him that there’s nothing else to be done, and that Eren only has a few weeks left to life. It’s at this point that Eren starts folding paper cranes. When Levi asks him why he’s only folding cranes, Eren tells him that there was an old saying about how a thousand paper cranes could grant a wish. At first, Levi scoffs at it; it seemed to be pure superstition to him. But when Eren becomes too weak to fold, Levi starts folding cranes for him whenever he had the free time to- dozens, hundreds of them, ranging in different shapes and sizes. He’d be sitting by Eren’s bed, a stack of origami paper and cranes next to him as Eren watched him, growing ever weaker. He dies before Levi can finish the thousand. Only later does Levi realize that Eren had never planned on making the thousand cranes- he only wanted Levi to stay by his side at the very end.
