I love these cars! A lot of them came with automatics though. I had a friend of mine back in the 70's who had 5 of these 442's....a 67, a 68, two 1970s, and a '71....the only one that had a 4 speed was his '68. Two of them (a '70 and his '71) were the W-30 models, both automatics...in fact his 1970 W-30 had a rare factory bench seat with a column shift!

I did some checking and you are correct. Some of the cars did have automatics after the first two year models, 1964 and 1965.

All 5 of my buddy's 442s, including his two W-30s were documented, factory numbers matching 442s....In fact, from 1964 - 1968 the '4-4-2' was only a performance package for the F-85 and Cutlass models, and the only year the 4-4-2 was a true "4 speed, 4 barrel, dual exhaust" package was 1964 with the B09 option (the first year). GM even produced a few B09 option four door sedan 442's in 1964 (I believe about a dozen). They are worth gold if you can find one of them today! In 1965 the "442" designation was changed to imply "400 cid, 4 barrel, dual exhaust, as the 330cid engine was dropped, and the base transmission became the 3 speed manual, with the 2 speed Jetaway and the 4 speed manual as options. Only from 1968 - 1971 the 442 actually became a stand alone model with the 3 speed manual trans being base with the 3 speed auto and the 4 speed manual being optional. After 1972 the 442 was relegated to basically an 'appearance' package status. The W-30 options were even more dizzying. It was a crazy time in automotive buying when you could 'spec out' the car the way you want...not like today where you take the car the way the factory builds it....
