Your photo inspired me to look up info about this. I'm guessing this is an Emerson Respirator. Was this part of a bigger display or was there any explanation as to why the owners choose to display one of these. Not really something you'd pick up at a garage sale. I've read there are still people who use "iron lungs" in the USA and not just elderly polio victims. Maybe a dozen nationwide and getting spare parts can be an issue.
Syria is a scary place for a lot of reasons right now, but in addition to everything else, it appears that polio is making a comeback there. It is frightening to think how easily a nightmare like polio could return.

The old store in which I saw it was empty and closed except for the iron lung in the window. I don't know why it was there. I was at a Crusie-In on the public square and just happened to see it. Livingston is a small town and many of the small stores have closed but some are happily making a comeback. I have heard unfortunately on the national news that several cases of polio have been reported in the United States in recent years. They say it is because it is still in some other countries and people catch it and bring it back here and we have long since quit giving vaccinations for it to our children like they did when I was a child.
