Wouldn’t the young be precocial and able to walk and run alongside the mother?
Then again, young precocial birds do sometimes ride on their parents.

Someone on twitter pointed out that it makes sense, it would probably be too hot for the chicks to walk on the sand. And I didn’t even think of that. : p
