Incredible! It's so hard to criticize well because there are SO MANY DIFFERENT ARTISTS! Now, where was I?.. Ah, yes. I love how this incorporates almost every MarioKart character from the series. The only one that I can think of off the top of my head is ROB from MarioKartDS. Ah well, let's focus on what IS there, shall we? (I ramble too much.) All of the different styles seem to merge together here and create and BIG SHMORGISHBORG of MarioKart! (A couple days after I go MarioKart Seven, too. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Wink/Razz"/>) The background characters gave me a good laugh and reminder of the old Mario characters, too. Like Koopie Koo from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Old Door, the Shroob from Partners in Time, Tubba Blubba(?) from the original Paper Mario, The X-Naut, Booker from Super Mario RPG, and the Big-Bomb King from Super Mario 64, at least that's what I think. Anyhow, enough rambling again! Well, I wish that was possible. The Goomba and the Blue Shell at the end gave me a good laugh, too (Not to mention that Blooper being angry at Daisy!) In the end, my favorite couple of drivers would have to be Shy Guy, Rosalina, Birdo, Dry Bowser, and Toad! Keep up the good work, all of you!
~With love for art,

Around September of 2008, a full year ago, I read about this project, a massive collaboration among the high-tier artists of DeviantART. The subject: Super Mario, but that wasn't enough, it's Super Mario Kart, an integral part of modern culture for everyone under the age of 30, you just can't go wrong with that.
So with nothing to review for the month of September, this shows up, and my "problem" was instantly solved. It's going to be a delight to critique what is arguably among the best things to come out of DeviantART this year, and I don't mean this lightly.
It takes several minutes to truly take in everything that unfolds here. The fact that the drivers race to the right is a clever use of the web medium and allows for the viewer to "race along" to the finish line. As I scroll past the racers, I'm really not interrupted by the constant shift between artistic styles, albeit a minor "hiccup" every now and then, quite an impressive feat. One could argue that this is due to the original designs that act as some sort of unifying template, but I like to think it has more to do with Dirk's selection of the artists. It's an interesting question, but my verdict remains the same: it works.
While I am fully aware of the massive scope of the project, I have some things to say about the picture as a whole. I think it would've been awesome to see some more interaction between the characters. There's some minor weapon use, but nothing too Mario-Kart-y. I also would had loved to see some overtaking and overlapping, even if it was just a little bit. The background, serving its purpose quite well, could easily accommodate for this.
These are all technicalities, little tweaks to an awesome concept, because in the end, what really makes this an remarkable piece of art is the collaborative effort. It's a concrete, no-nonsense manifestation of the often vaguely defined community spirit of DeviantART.

Interaction between the drivers was nearly impossible to handle. I was glad that I got the drivers, i don't know how long it would have taken, when the artists had to work together (no critic against the artists).
Some artists also jumped off the project, so coaching the project was already a fulltime job by asking new artists politly to join.
I wrote that the artists can talk about a possible little interaction between their drivers, but the effort here was not really there. Only and worked together and did a DoubleDash collab with Bowser and DryBones.
I tried my best to put them so together to get a slight interaction. See Donkey Kong/Baby Peach, Rosalina is scared of the Blue Shell and tries to break, Pete Piranha hits Koopa with a Red Shell, etc.
And overlapping is no good idea, because i liked the concept of 'showing' all styles in their full glory.
And the overlapping made the pic more messy.
The pic is till not finished. I work on a better Finish line. More elemenst/details will be added.
I maybe get some artists on board to help me out with the finish line a bit, or with other things.
I think of stuff to add.
Thanks for the good critic!

Interaction between the drivers was nearly impossible to handle.
As the host of the ~InspectorIroh project, I fully understand the implications of a collaborative project and the many problems that come with it. In my role as the critic I felt that I needed to review the picture on its own merits, but the artist in me fully understands that the suggestions are near impossible to actually bring into reality. However, it is interesting to read your motivations for the decisions you made.
The title quite literally suggests that the project is still in beta, just don't overdo it. On a related note, I wouldn't mind throwing in a background character, would you still be in need of one.

A bit strange to ask AFTER you used it already. But it's ok as long as you dont make money with it.

It's called being original and having a style, something you don't seem to have.

Wow this is a really neat and detailed piece!
I'm kind of want it in a different style,
but that's my biased opinion-
This is must of taken you a long time
and I appreciate your effort to create this.
Okay... I have to ask: would it be okay if I recreated this piece with my own style. I may go insane from all the detail, but I am curious and it's growing insatiable by the minute.

I wont say no, just give me the credit, but I think you need the ok from all the artists involved when you wanna recreate it.

Alright, I will give all 45 of the artists creditΒ
And I've made a pitch and will commence sending all the requests.
Also what would you suggest if I can't get ahold of them in a reasonable amount of time?

well the best is, you draw each driver in your own style. also the bg characters.

that would be a good idea
also, may I just say, 45 people is a lot. How did you manage unite that many people? It's pretty amazing
