Cassandra knew the story of her sister. The miracle princess who was stolen away, never to be seen again. She had stood with the king and queen every year when the first lantern was lifted into the night. Every year, she had watched her parents’ grief, unable to mourn that which she had never met. Nonetheless, she was a beloved daughter and princess. Amidst her endless lessons, King Frederic had watched her grow with pride. She had done all in her power to be a fine heir to the kingdom. Her childhood…her entire life was spent in preparation to rule.She was the light. The hope for the future.
What was the Lost Princess but a shadow?
“She is the rightful heir.”
“You cannot seriously consider her a fit ruler!” Cassandra snarled. “She knows nothing of Corona! Nothing of our history or that of our neighbors’ or our laws, she knows little of our culture, and she…she paints everywhere like a child!”
“There is time for her to learn yet,” the king rejoined calmly. “I have every confidence your sister will yet be a great queen.”
Cassandra bristled. “And me? What’s to become of me? Am I going to be cast aside after everything I’ve done?”
“Enough, Cassandra. We will speak no more of this.”

“How could he do this?”
“Oh, Cassandra.” Her mother brushed a gentle hand through her black hair. “You know your father——”
“It’s madness,” she insisted. “All my life, I’ve had to prove to the council, to Grandmother, to everyone that I was capable. Why should I surrender my birthright to Helen simply because she happened to be born first?”
Queen Ariana took a calming breath. “Your sister prefers to be called Rapunzel, Cassandra. You know this.”
“That is the name that woman gave her. And that’s what I mean!” Cassandra groaned. “By insisting on using that…provincial name, she casts doubt on her own legitimacy. Even now, half the court is questioning if she really is the Lost Princess. The Dame Elizabeth is already spreading rumors she and Fitzherbert are nothing but a pair of opportunist con artists.”
“Is that what you believe?”
Cassandra paused. “Well…no.” The account ‘Rapunzel’ had given about the Gothel woman was plausible, and it had too many well thought out details to be dismissed as a hoax outright. Besides, she had ridden into the forest with a contingent of palace guards and had seen the tower for herself. That and the palace horse Maximus, and she couldn’t believe she was crediting this, seemed to have non-verbally corroborated Rapunzel and Fitzherbert’s story. The horse even seemed to like the girl, which in itself was quite a feat. Cassandra sighed. “But what I believe doesn’t matter. It’s what the people believe. Rapunzel doesn’t see it because Father keeps her confined within the palace walls and barely lets her outside, but in the town, the people are suspicious of the barefoot girl who came from nowhere.”
“You don’t think they’ll love her in time?”
“I don’t know what they’ll think of her.” Cassandra said. “What I really fear, though, is how the Queen of Ingvarr, King Trevor of Equis, and the Dragon Lords will see her.” Especially if Ingvarr decided her smiling, simpering sister was weak and a Corona under her rule was an easy target. What then?
