Description After his successful S-51, followed by the S-55, the large helicopter manufacturer 'Sikorsky' developed the S-58 between 1952 and early 1954, suitable for combating submarines. Many versions of this type were developed over the years, with the US anti-submarine version being designated HSS-1N (later SH-34J). A sonar installation was built in to carry out anti-submarine warfare tasks.

With the rise of the Soviet Navy and the threat of its huge and rapidly growing submarine fleet, anti-submarine warfare became the main task of the KM in a NATO context from the late 1950s. This manifested itself, among other things, in a change in the task of Hr.Ms. 'Karel Doorman'; from air defense to anti-submarine warfare. From January 1960, the Naval Aviation Service (MLD) received twelve aircraft for use on board Hr.Ms. 'Karel Doorman' - made possible by folding rotors and tail. In combination with the Grumman S-2F "Trackers", six S-58s frequently practiced fighting submarines. The other aircraft were deployed from the Marine Vliegkamp Valkenburg (MVKV) for transport and OSRD tasks. The removal of Hr. Ms. 'Karel Doorman' in 1968 and the age of the SH-34Js was the reason to remove the submarine tracking equipment, changing the designation to UH-34J. In 1972 this type of helicopter was taken out of service.

Not provided under MDAP. ex-N266. Delivered as SH-34J, later UH-34J. This helicopter was built as the only example of the type HUS-1 and was transferred to the MLD in 1963. After being taken out of service on May 4, 1971, the aircraft was handed over to the Anthony Fokker School for instructional purposes in 1973, which in turn lent it to the MLM in 1994. In 1996, the '134' became the permanent property of the MLM. The aircraft is equipped with a 'hoist' (a hoisting installation) and, as can be seen from the symbols, has 'fished up' 3 drowning people.
