Description The series NS 4600 was a series of 20 steam locomotives for freight trains with the axle arrangement 2-8-0, which was built in 1923 by Werkspoor for the Dutch Railways (NS).

Around 1922 there was a need for heavy freight machines that could transport the coal trains from the Limburg mining region to other parts of the Netherlands. The NS 6200 series, which as a tender locomotive could not carry enough water and coal, was taken as an example for the new NS 4600, but the tractive effort increased. The machines got two outer cylinders with a larger diameter than the 6200. The steam boiler became the same as that of the NS 3700.

Ir. P. Labrijn, chief of Materieel and Workshops at the NS, designed this type in collaboration with manufacturer Werkspoor, but the locomotives turned out not to be sufficiently balanced. The fact that they only had two large outer cylinders caused quite a lot of rocking. Experts judged that the locomotives would most likely have worked well if they had been fitted with four cylinders, such as the NS 3700 series. These locomotives already exchanged their four-axle tenders for the three-axle tenders of the express train locomotives 3701-3720 when they were put into service.

Fifteen of these locomotives were in service with the Deutsche Reichsbahn during the Second World War. No less than six suffered serious damage in Germany, while loco 4616 was heavily damaged in Amsterdam. All these machines were disposed of in 1947. The 4613 was repaired at Werkspoor in Amsterdam, and the 4606 and 4611 went to the locomotive factory and boiler builder Frichs in Aarhus (Denmark), where some 3700s were also repaired. The last 4600 was retired in 1949.
