Description In the 1950s, when the car and the airplane were on the rise, then NS president Dr. ir. F.Q. den Hollander that there was a need for a European network of fast and comfortable 1st class trains. During a UIC conference in 1953 these plans took shape and the Trans Europ Express (TEE) was born.

The NS and SBB decided to develop a train set together, this was a 4-piece diesel train set with different Dutch and Swiss characteristics. In October 1955 the order for 5 of these trainsets was placed. Werkspoor took care of the 5 power cars, SIG in Neuhausen for the 15 accompanying carriages and Brown-Boveri in Baden took care of the electrical installation.

The 3 NS trainsets were given the numbers NS 1001-1003 and the 2 SBB trainsets 501 and 502.

After the SBB 501 crashed in Germany in 1971, the 4 remaining sets were only used for the Edelweis. Since a large part of the route they drove for this purpose was provided with an overhead line and the fact that the power cars often suffered from malfunctions, it was no longer considered economically justifiable to keep the sets in service any longer. The diesel multiple units were replaced by electric SBB TEE multiple units and the 4 diesel units were put up for sale.

The trainsets were eventually sold in 1976 to the Canadian Urban Transportation Development Corporation, which housed them with the Ontario Northland Railway in North Bay. For this, the diesel multiple units in the workshops Tilburg and Zurich were overhauled and adapted for service in cold Canada, where temperatures can be reached well below the minus point. In addition, the couples received typical North American number light boxes and lamps on the noses and a bell was placed on top of the cabs. Several barge changes were also carried out, for example AR from the NS 1003 ended up in ONR 1902. (Together with the mDk and the saloon carriage of the NS 1003 and the Ak of the NS 1002) The sets were finally shipped to Toronto in 1977.

Immediately after arrival, the sets were renumbered because there appeared to be number duplications with diesel locomotives. For example, ONR 1902 was renumbered ONR 1982. Since Werkspoor's power cars could not withstand the harsh Canadian winters, the power cars were replaced by FP7A diesels as early as 1979 and 1980. The trainsets were renumbered again and so the ONR 1982 was renumbered into ONR 1984.

At the beginning of this century, five carriages returned to Switzerland and later to the Netherlands. At the end of 2020, the five carriages were taken over by the Dutch Transport Museum.
